All Things Broncos: Chargers’ timing auspicious?

  • TX2STEP · 3 years ago
Are the Broncos as banged up missing Eck and Ian Gold?
  • Guest · 3 years ago
Merriman has already served two games out his four game suspension (Cleveland and Cincinnati). He will miss this first game with Denver and then against Oakland. His first game back will be when SD plays Buffalo. Castillo may not play, but I wouldn't count on Williams missing as well. Better concentrate on stopping the Charger offense.

WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN AGAINST THE CHARGERS. I'm telling you now. Tatum Bell is weak, he runs East and West. I don't think Shanahan will even try...Plummer will come out in the Shotgun.

Let's all pray that Shottenheimer starts playing for overtime with a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
  • Josh Adams · 3 years ago
***I'M SORRY BUT I DON'T THINK THAT OUR OFFENSE WILL BE TEARING A NEW ONE AT ALL THIS YEAR. THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL BRONCO TEAM. I FEEL SO LUCKY THAT OUR RECORD IS 7-2 BECAUSE OUR TEAM HAS NOT PLAYED WELL AT ALL. EITHER OUR OFFENSE PUTS PLAYS TOGETHER OR OUR DEFENSE DOMINATES BUT NEVER AT THE SAME TIME.

THE CHARGERS COULD SIGN A GUY FROM OFF THE STREET AND APPLY PRESSURE JAKE OR STOP THE RUN.

WE'RE AT THE MIDDLE POINT OF THE SEASON AND WHILE OTHER TEAMS ARE GELLING WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIND A STARTING RUNNING BACK, A STARTING OFFENSIVE LINE, AND FINDING A WAY TO PRESSURE THE OPPONENTS QB.
  • JP · 3 years ago
The reality is both teams are hurting but I think we are worse off being without Bell, Gold, Lepsis, Brown and Brandon.

Furthermore, the Bengal’s lit up San Diego with Palmer and Johnson...no offense to the Broncos duo, but I'm not sure Plummer and Walker can combine on that same level all the time.

Either way, I believe it will be a tough game that is decided by 7 points or less.

    JP's points to win:

    1) On offense, the Broncos must keep San Diego guessing. Now Shanny knows best, but on3rd and 1, I would go for a deep pass and on downs like 2nd and 8, run it. The next series do something different. It seems we get predictable on some of the games and the Chargers are too good to think we can simply over power them. Plus, I think we have had some success on the 3rd and 1 throwing the deep stuff to Walker.

    2) We need to do well on 3rd downs and not turn the ball over....duh.

    2) On defense, we need to sack Rivers often. Being a rookie I think the pressure can make a difference. In SD's two losses, Rivers was sacked 4 times by KC and once by the Ravens.
    3) We need to force at least 2 turnovers. Against KC, SD turned it over three times.
    4) We will need to account, as best as possible, for LT. He is on fire right now and is the key to SD's wins. In years past, Denver has shut LT down, but this time, we don’t have Gold on the field. Keep a watch on LT in the red zone where he occasionally throws a TD pass.

Nothing I've said is rocket science, but I wanted to say it anyway.

With a heavy heart my predication is SD 34, Denver 28.

In the end, San Diego is incredibly hot right now (and have been) and we barely beat Oakland. We have significant injuries and don’t have a running game. I was impressed with Plummer's game against New England and the Colts and think he will have another stand out game against SD, but in the end, LT will be our nemesis, scoring three TD's and rushing for 128 yards.

damn going through all this comments you guys are all worried about my team that bad damn down here in sd everyone knows we are gonna win our defense did bad against the bengals and it was because know one was on the same page , chargers or coming into invesco field with a defense that will crush you plummer all other games before we played the bengals and without merriman we still won games we have real good defense players covering for castillo and merriman, and will be ready to beat ur team , and to all you bronco fans keep an eye out in our defense you will be surprise with what we are bringing to you...........

    I'm a huge Bronco's fan. I weigh 733 lbs.
They call me the "Atomic Doughnut".
    Denver will do fine.
San Diego has too many 'holes' in it's defense...
Watch out for KC though. They will be up for that game. The rematch in San Diego may also be much tougher.
If Denver is healthy they can beat anybody.
    Lay off Plummer.
The season is far from over and the Shanny has spoken and says he will not repeat the Brian Griese fiasco.
You don't change QB''s in mid stride unless you're losing consistently. Cutler needs to play at some point, but not as a starter just yet.
Many of you would have benched the Elwaynator when he wasn't playing well and making bonehead plays and throwing interceptions...you just want something to gripe about.
    The doughnut has spoken.
  • Matt · 3 years ago
I pray that Coyer is planning a new 3-4 defense for the rematch vs the Colts. Why not make Elvis a linebacker and mix it up a bit. We have to try something else versus Manning. Of course not of that will matter if we can't go at least 1-1 over the next two games.
  • The Sports Professor · 3 years ago
Denver's overall record against Schottenheimer temas is remarkable...He clams up and chokes against Denver...Count this as another Schottenheimer debacle.
    Denver 27-17
  • Atlas · 3 years ago
Denver never looks pretty when they win, but they do win. Denver beat New England on the road and they beat the Ravens at home. Neither game looked very pretty but I look for the same Sunday night. Denver wins 24-16.
  • AndrewW · 3 years ago
    chargers#1, I couldn't understand a thing you were saying. Don't worry, I'm sure it wasn't important.

Matt, i find it hard to believe that you are even thinking about a Broncos - Colts rematch when it's questionable that we will get thru the next 4 games with more victories than losses. What Coyer should be concerned with right now is who is going to cover Antonio Gates. With Brandon out it leaves a corner or a line backer. Either way the Denver D is going to get burned early and often unless Coyer makes that his priority, not revamping the D for a rematch that probably won't happen. The Denver D is vulnerable. Indy, Pitts and Oakland proved it. The next 4 games will determine if Coyer has his priorities strait.
  • Raghu Sakleshpur · 3 years ago
Denver has not got much of a chance this year as well to make it to Super Bowl. I'd rather they start building the team for next year. Especially if they loose the next game to SD as they will only be the 3rd or 4th best team in AFC. Given the shape of the Offense this will not take them beyond the first game in playoffs. So if Denver looses this week they should start playing the rookie QB..
  • sdchargerfannnnn · 3 years ago
I have all of the respect in the world for the Denver Broncos. I agree that our defense is suffering,(no Castillo, Merriman, and possibly Williams) however I think the days of "Denver beating San Diego" are nearing an end. Our Depth is much stronger this year, and we finally have a QB who knows how to rally both sides of the ball. This game will decide the AFC outcome...period.
  • Toney Hill · 3 years ago
    Broncos 30 San Diego 24

The AFC West has three tough teams. SD and KC aren't givemes. Denver will need to win this at home if they want to win the division. Plummer, Walker, et al, need to play big. Defense needs to stop Tomlinson and Gates and win the turnover department. Special teams needsbig

Footnote - I'm not suprised that Rivers has played so well. He was tremendous at NC State and has a real passion to win. Without Merriman, our offense can move the ball on the ground and in the air.

"The Broncos may be catching the Chargers at a good time"

The Broncos have been lucky this way all year. We played the Chefs right when D.Huard started playing, he was not 'n-sync' with his receivers. The same held true with Tom Brady and the Patriots. The week we played them, Brady publicly said he really missed his starting 2 receivers and hadn't gotten timing down with the new ones. The Ravens and Browns offense was so offensive, they both fired their O-Coordinator not long after playing Denver. This Chargers team is like nothing San Diego has ever had. Strenght on offense and defense. But a few lucky injuries for us. Also, we never win at Arrow Head, that's just the way it is. Accept it. We win at Mile High, they win at their house.
  • Mecklenburg77 · 3 years ago
Denver will win this one. This is simple. Its just like here in KC (I am a HUGE BRONCOS FAN). The Chiefs become a different team at home, unless its the playoffs! Denver will win this one at home. It will be the Chargers who will come out sluggish and Denver will be on fire. Guaranteed!
  • William Stephen · 3 years ago
OK here's the scoop The Broncos play to the level of their opponent. Colts play well- PAts play well play like the Raiders against the punks PLay the Browns like the Browns BEat the Chargers in a mess of a game Who cares The Broncos will win !!! 31-24 And Rivers goes down just like Breese!!! And their Done!!!!
  • johnny j · 3 years ago
Raghu Sakleshpur...you can't be serious... This is for EVERYONE out there saying we need to put in Cutler. Even if we do lose... Shanny will never put Cutler in until we are out of the playoff hunt. Get that through your thick skulls...Also, to the Charger fans who think that our reign of the West is over, we might have a hiccup this year(I still have confidence in our boys though) but Cutlers time will be here enough and we will be a force to play against.
  • johnny j · 3 years ago
"All those people that are calling for cutler are morons"-Rod Smith

Even Rod the God said it...so do your best to get behind Plummer...i know its tough but just give him one more good year
  • Rooood · 3 years ago
    Simple as this:

Evil Jake shows up, we lose by a lot.

Good Jake shows up, we win but it will be close.
  • Mark · 3 years ago
Nothing like good solid journalism. Hmmm, Merriman serving 2nd game, not, this will be his third. May not be enough oxygen in the great city of Denver. Williams will never miss this game as OT Neal tore up Williams cheaply years ago. Chargers play horribly in Denver but one thing for sure it will be one fun game to watch.
  • smokey the bear · 3 years ago
To all the unsure and negative Bronco fans - have some faith, baby! What's wrong with you all, giving in before we even play? We're 7-2 too despite the "luck" we've had, and lack of respect (or even mention - kiss my butt ESPN - especially you Salisbury!!) by the "experts"! Forget that stuff, and please...if our players are so bad, why don't y'all go try out then? When you all start for Denver you might gain some fraction of credibility. Until then, lay off Plummer, Tatum, and the rest, and try to support your team a little instead of whining and crying all the time.

Our boys are 7-2 and poised to go on top of the west, despite how "miserable" and "lucky" we are. Besides, even if we lose, we get another crack in a few weeks, so relax.

To the Charger fans - I like the fact that everyone thinks you're better than us this year. It will make the upcoming Bronco victory that much sweeter!

GO DENVER!!!!!! I want to see the ESPN analysts forced to mention you guys once in a while.
  • CB · 3 years ago
I wonder What Cutler thinks of Rod Smith calling people morons who want to see him at QB?Is he saying that Cutler (his teammate) is a terrible QB???If Plummer goes down and Jay Cutler is put in the game, I wonder if Cutler will throw the ball to Smith(probably not, because Smith is never open).

The only way Denver will beat SD is if SD gives them the game by making turnovers. If SD dosen't turn the ball over I dont think Denver will be able to outscore them. Denver's Defense is not going to shut these guys down they have way to many weaopons.
I cant believe they scored 42 points in 2 quarters last week.
This is a MUST win game for Denver, as they will not win in KC on thanksgiving.

    SD 35
    Den 24

Wait, before you Bronco fans pile on me, here's what happens next:

After Denver loses to KC and falls to 7-4 and is out of the Division race, Shanny will decide to bench plummer( and Rod Smith) and go with Cutler(and Kircus).
Cutler will spark the offense down the home stretch and denver will get into the playoffs as a wildcard team and shock the world by going on the road and beating Indy and San Diego. Than they will Kick the Bears in the Superbowl!!!

    You heard it here first!
  • J · 3 years ago
People are such whiners - go be a Colts fan if you want your QB to throw for lots of yards and TDs

Football is a team game and because everyone in Colorado forgot that in the Elway years, you are quick to throw a guy under a bus because he isnt 16-0 with 5,000 yds a year.

Jake isnt spectacular but he is a good QB. And News flash - the only 3-4 games that really count all year is when you are in the playoffs.

Ill take Jake with pedestrian numbers and 3-0 in the playoffs this year over Peytons undefeated MVP numbers and a single loss in January

It sounds as if most of the people complaining on these boards never played a down themselves. If you had, you'd realize how stupid it is to start a first year QB in this situation.

I hope Jake wins a Super Bowl as much for me as a fan as for Jake to be able to shut all the idiots up. And there is no gaurantee Jake wont be back next year as starting QB so get used to trusting the team and the guy in charge knowing a bit more about the team than YOU.
  • Billy · 3 years ago
Jake and the Broncos will not only win this week, they are going to dominate the Chargers this week and here is my reasons. P.Rivers have never played at a place like Invesco a place where the best QBs in the league struggle. And he is playing the best defense he's face so far this year, there will be no 42 points in the 2nd half this week. Tomlinson the great back he is has never had a great game at Invesco look it up. And finally the offense will put big points this week in the Big games this year Jake Plummer has been flawless, look that up to. So quit whining Bronco fans your starting to sound like those idiots at ESPN!!!
  • KenBob · 3 years ago
What many Charger lovers are forgetting is that Cinci scored over 40 on the SD defense. I believe Denver will win this one going away.

Very, Very Unrealsitic View Billy..... Jake Plummer has been "Flawed" all season, you know it, any Denver Bronco Fan knows it (Check out the message board on the Broncos website)
As far as Invesco being a place where great QB's struggle...I didn't see Manning "Struggle" this year, I doubt Rivers will either seeing as how his pass rating is second in the NFL.
Finally, you are used to seeing the Chargers count on LT to beat the Bronks by himself, this year however, we have several more weapons to use, this will allow our offense to confuse the Denver defense. It will be a close game however I wouldn't be so confident that you are going to "Dominate" as you put it. Keep dreaming buddy!
  • skierdunc · 3 years ago
Wow,what a shocker. Bronco fans not happy, Jake making mistakes, and Charger fans that can't write or spell. ESPN wishes they still had Sunday night for a game like this, and for those of us living outside of Colorado a game we can watch.
What Bar is going to be open Thanksgiving night to watch the KC game? None.
Shanahan has Shottenheimer's number and Bronco Fan will make the difference. 21-17
  • Darrell · 3 years ago
After reading all the negative comments on these blogs, I have to wonder about the so-called Broncos fans writing them? Remember it’s a team game, and think of this, if Cutler was thrown into the starting QB, what would happen to his confidence if he doesn’t perform? Has anyone really though about it, remember this guy is supposed to be Denver’s future. Get behind your team, Jake is a great QB, as long as we win that is all I care about.
  • GBS · 3 years ago
Cinci scored over 40 on the SD defense...and your point is that Jake is just as good as Carson? Using that logic, Indy scored 34 on the Broncos, and the Chargers are even MORE productive. Looks like Denver has scored more than 20 points TWICE this season...S.D. has done that EIGHT times, scored more than 30 points on FIVE occasions, and more that 40 points on THREE occasions. If Denver can't keep S.D.'s offensive weapons in check, the Chargers will be the ones to win going away. If it's a defense and field position fight, the decider will be the old standbys...luck and turnovers.
  • NorCal Bronco Fan · 3 years ago
Darrell you said it. Will the true Bronco fans please stand up? We dominate the Chargers and this week will be no different. Shannahan can outcoach Marty with one brain tied behind his back. Philip Rivers will have his first "bad game" after Al is in his grill all day. All you haters can sit down and shut up! NorCal Bronco Fan
  • nick · 3 years ago
    btw, this is to GBS,

what defense has the chargers faced that even remotely resembles the broncos??? let me see...the ravens. and they still beat the chargers. what other defenses did you guys play??? yes the broncos, have let opponents pile up passing yards, but those two games were against indy and pittsburgh at home. anytime you take out a running game, of course there's going to be a lot more passing. ya'll got to remember, denver has allowed the fewest points in the nfl. i think it's 12.3 a game. and we're doing that with a standard base 4-3-4 defense. highschool football teams use that....and we're still shuttin teams down. we hardly, if not, blitz, and if you look at the d-line once the snap goes, there's no stunting, we're not bringing up the safeties, no disguising...and we're still getting it done. now, if we did stunt and incorporate more schemes, imagine how dominating that defense would be. case in point, denver's d get's it done with pure athleticism. not taking anything away from the chargers d, they're solid too, but after merriman's drama....kind of hard to give him props. trust me, jake is frustrating to watch and if we do lose the game, which i don't think it will, it'll be because of him. our offense is definitely not in the same league as the chargers, but our defense, as simple as it is utilized, is better.

    denver wins a close one....
  • Rick Wiley · 3 years ago
This is actually Shawne Merriman's third suspended week, and he will be back to face the Bills on Dec.3rd.
  • Schiess · 3 years ago
As a life-long, die-hard Charger fan, I've gotta be real here and write from the head, not from the heart, unlike some of the illiterate Charger fans above. Like it or not, neither team is going to dominate this game. It will probably come down to a field goal at the end. This game (particularly Denver's defense) makes me nervous.

This game is going to be won (or lost) in the trenches. if Denver's line gives Plummer any time to throw, it's gonna be a long day for my Chargers (our DB's are iffy at best, and horrible with no pressure). On the other hand, if our line can open a few holes for LT, we'll be that much closer to winning...Bottom line, this game comes down to which Offensive Line plays better.

It's gonna take a HUGE effort, since my Chargers can never seem to win in Denver.
  • bruce even · 3 years ago
I'm a life-long Chargers fan and have lived in San Diego my whole life, but don't hate me too much since I was born in Boulder! And yes I know how to spell too! This game all depends on the Chargers defense. Phillips might pressure Plummer enough to help the Chargers secondary. I would like the Chargers chances better if we had our best defensive players participating. Rivers did OK in Kansas City, so I don't expect him to fall apart in Denver. I expect Denver to key on L.T., but he usually gets to defenses when they get tired in the 2nd half. We will see how much the Chargers have improved in this game. They have played very well in their two night games this season. It's a very important game for both teams, so I expect both teams to be cautious. It should be fun to watch!
  • Alex · 3 years ago
I know this is off-topic, but I have to say I have tons of respect for L.T.
Before the 2004 season, L.T. was going into the final year on his contract. Instead of potentially becoming a free agent, he decided to get an extension with a Chargers team that looked bad, saying in essence, "I want to win here."
Tons of respect for the guy. Hope he doesn't tear us up too bad Sunday!
    GO BRONCOS!
  • sdchargerfannnnn · 3 years ago
    Here is a cool stat:

Denver Broncos Total Touchdowns in 2006 = 14

    LT's total Touchdowns in
    2006 = 18
  • Rick · 3 years ago
I am a die hard Charger fan and looking forward to the BIG GAME Sunday! Bronco fans have a lot to be proud of as we do here. Broncos' defense is superb and ours is as well if we have our pass rushers playing. The Charger secondary is average at best but looks a lot better with Foley and Merriman playing. Our offense tends to start slowly, but by the time the third quarter is done, you might feel shell shocked! So good luck to you Broncos fans but remember what ever happens here, there is a rematch in our backyard Dec. 10th.

    GOOD MORNING DENVER!!!!!!

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY THIS TURNED OUT TO BE!!!!!!
  • Doesn't Matter · 3 years ago
What a waste of time to trash talk no matter how good or bad your team is. However, you Broncos Fans have to admit when you see a class-act like LT and other low-key gamers that the Chargers have play with so much heart you can't help but respect that. I will be nice to see SD at full-strength, Very soon. Last thing. Your Broncos need to stop with those cheap knee shots, what a bunch of crap! Peace the hell out from Sunny SD!
  • Not important · 3 years ago
    Three things

    1) LT and many others on the Chargers are class acts.

    2) Wait until the Chargers are at full-strength, then they will dominate at least the numbers should bare that out.

    3) Broncos, enough with all the cheap knee shots. Igor Olshansky should have ripped Tom Nalen a new-one!
