All Things Broncos: Jake as backup in ‘07? Unlikely

  • SoTXBroncoFan · 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but, no one including Mike himself, expects Jake to return next year and be a back-up. For anybody! Once you get that taste and starting job pay ($21.8 mil over 4 yrs) you will latch on with any team willing to offer the starting role.

Mike had to make the offer though. For if he didn't, it would be the ultimate slap on the face. Aside from drafting a qb in the 1st rd, calling plays that dont support your qb's strengths, keeping the leash on him ( I don't fault, by the way) and letting the news leak that Jake was going to get benched prior to the sit down meeting. Other than that, it was 'professional courtesy'. As my parents once taught me, 'never burn your bridges'.

However, in this case, I think Mike lit a fire to that bridge back on April 29, 2006 with the draft of JC. He's only added lighter fluid to it since.

Bill, I'd like to comment on your story 'Broncos in Cutler's corner'. As I fully expected, and to the contrary of those few who objected, citing the potential split within the locker room, it is very apparent the leaders including Bailey, Wilson & Walker are standing up and showing support for the kid.

With the class of our organization and the desire to win NOW, I never anticipated the team allowing personal feelings to interfere with a business decision. Even one of the most vocal Plummer supporters in Alexander verbally stood up for Cutler. Kudos.

I, as many, believe a move like this was intended and will light the proverbial fire throughout the team and I'm looking forward to the results. Burn Baby Burn!!!

I'd like to see Plummer in Houston with the Kubiak system. Denver wil continue to falter over tee next two years suffereing from Kubiak withdrawal. Kubiak was the key to tapping Plummer the right way.
  • Doug in Australia · 3 years ago
It would be good to have Jake around next year as he does know the system if something were to hapen to Cutler but i think that he'll want to go somewhere and compete for the starting job and not to be just Elam's holder on kicks. Don't expect many teams to jump up to try to get him either by trade as they probably know that the Broncos will dump him and get nothing if they just wait the Broncos out. Don't think that Mike would like to pay him what he;s geting paid either to sit on the bench. I hope that they've made the right decision because it will be detrimental to Plummer either way really. A lot of people realy seem to put the blame on Plummer but it goes much deeper than that with the lack of offensive production this year. Who knows, maybe Cutler can pull off a tom brady or big ben trick? Again, let's hope so.
  • Ted · 3 years ago
I am curious to see if Gary Kubiak will show some interest. I think he was a key component to Jake's success last year.

Has anyone called number 11. The BVP would make an excellent backup to Franchise.

Jake could be the starter in Denver next year, especially after Cutler goes winless the rest of this season. Overrated and full of hype - that's Jay Cutler. The grass is always greener...Go Seahawks!
  • Steve · 3 years ago
No offense guys, but Texas is set on QBs. They're not looking for anyone to replace their starter, and Jake wants to be a starter.

Very selfishly, I'd like to see Jake stay with Denver as well. I mean, if a team with Denver's offensive weapons and QB-friendly coaching staff can't get to and win a superbowl with Jake, what makes any other front office think they can? I'm hoping that Jake's market value dips so low that there are no starting jobs out there for him next year and, with "backup" as his only viable option, he decides to stay where he knows the system and play for a team that respects him. For people who aren't students of the game, Plummer is like 25-30% the reason for the success of our kicking game - he's an outstanding place-holder. He knows the system, and he'd make a *fantastic* backup in the event Jay had to go out for a period of time and we needed to pick up a few games. Defenses are prepared to stop Jake now. They won't be ready for him as a backup, and he'd be successful for a game or two if needs be. I'm not sure how everyone forgets that Plummer batted .700 for us, but he did, and he'd be just that successful as a backup.

So, quick, start telling all your friends who work for other NFL teams that Jake's a terrible QB, and with any luck we'll get to keep him! :)
  • TOM · 3 years ago
This year's failures should be placed squarley on the shoulders of coach Shanahan he never utilized Jake to his potential, Jake has always been a go for broke qb, and will continue to be. SHANAHAN SHOULD BE OUT THE DOOR..
  • DKen · 3 years ago
Good point on Kube, Ted. He might love to have Jake in Houston but it would likely be a backup role there as well. No, I don't think Jake will stick around here but I sure wish him well, wherever he ends up.
  • art valencia · 3 years ago
i think plummer will go to dallas, and bledsoe will come to be a back up in denver next year. where is tommy maddox.
  • Karl · 3 years ago
Plummer i think would be a good fit for the bills, raiders,or may be a back up in philedelphia. I dont see him staying here to be a back-up. i dont see mike paying that money for him to do that either. I think we will have no prob picking a vetran up to help back-up and teach cutler..I would like to see jeff garcia, or even gus ferotte back since they have playing in our style of offense before.
  • lisa · 3 years ago
Jake will likely be a starter in the league next year, he's too good a player to be a backup.
  • Choakland Faiders · 3 years ago
Plummer will wind up in the same place that all washed out NFL players seeking one last chance go. He will be Oakland's QB next year.
  • Brian in Evans · 3 years ago
Anybody who blames the coach for Plummers ineptness, is just not too bright. Plummer will learn the hard way that nobody wants him as their starter, come this off-season. Just Like BVP, great guy, absolutely lousy quarterback.
Drew Brees stepped up and performed when they drafted Phillip Rivers. Jake wilted under pressure, just like he always does.
  • Johnny-huge broncos fan in Wyo · 3 years ago
I would love to see Plummer stick around i think its too early for the Jay Cutler era. Jay will get his time in Denver, but until then its Plummers time. Plummer can't be blamed for all the mistakes. There has been other contributors.
  • Rob · 3 years ago
I've always been a Shanahan fan but i can't help but scratch my head. low offensive production has some to do with jake but more to do with MIKE! What does Jake have to do with pulling a RB as soon as he starts to heat up and killing momentum.Shanahan's personnel decisions at running back has caused a lack of discipline on the line because guys don't know who their blocking for - is it Tatum "Dancing with the stars" Bell or mike "hit the hole fast and get some yards" Bell? Not to mention Nash, Sapp, Cobbs and the guy from seat 3 in the 2nd row. Give us a break and realize that even in a great scheme you have fit your personnel's strength.I can't believe i'm thinking this after 11 great years but if anyone should be benched it is Shanahan.

I have seen both QB's in action side by side in preseason games this year. Yes, Cutler looks good, but taking snaps in warm-ups. Plummer was a mile ahead of Cutler. It looked like a boy running plays next to a seasoned veteren. Denver's season and hopes of playoffs will be done. Hopefully by next season Cutler will start to come around. The player we really missed this year is Mike Anderson. Our rushing game is horrible, T. Bell is a wimp and M. Bell is as unpredictable as Plummer. Jake has taken the fall for a number of player's shortcommings.
  • martin · 3 years ago
hopefully this works out for our broncos...

i really feel sorry for jake, he's a good guy and he really battled his ass off, but seemed like the pressure created by the media, shanahan, the departure of kube was too much for one guy, but his failure was not all his fault, there were some crucial drops, too ...

by the way i also think that the other guy named manning in ny should be pulled for a game or two to think over some things (maybe that doesn't belong here - ok - i shut up ;)
  • cody · 3 years ago
Jake won't be around for his cap hit (around 10 mil i think) and there are teams he can play for, but if denver can talk him into a pay cut it would be great.
  • Mike · 3 years ago
Mike knows his best shot at winning this year is with Plummer. To get these results, he will sit plummer for two games then give him back the keys. At that point Plummer will be so pumped, he will perform one last time, for one last season in Denver.
  • Frank · 3 years ago
Wrong move to replace the QB now during the season. The Denver Offensive Line in a sub-par now in this era and not in the elite of the AFC. They will not register 50 yards rushing against the superior Seahawks this Sunday.

It is a shame that people in the media nor the fans will wake up to that fact that their team cannot push their opponents off the line. Denver is a 9-7 or 10-6 team at best because of this inability.

They will never win another Super Bowl until they fix the problems up front by getting men that can blow people off the line. Period.

Jake will have plenty of offers for next season choosing a better OL than Denvers.
  • aman in Canada · 3 years ago
its about time, plummers a good guy, knows the game of football but he doesnt have the physical tools, cant throw deep, and is not accurate. Mike had no choice, especially knowing that his job is on the line, if not this year next year.
  • DKen · 3 years ago
Hey PlummerFanClub, I remember hearing stuff like that when Denver grabbed John Elway in 1983. Let's see what Cutler can do first, Ok?
  • Kyle Millyard · 3 years ago
I think if the broncos want to make it to the playoffs the broncos need to keep Jack in the lineup. Jay is a untested rookie. Denver's line isnt a drop back and pass block line, they are better on the move with jack and the bootleg. If I were Mike I would have keept Bradly on and either keept as a back up or let him compete for the starting spot. I see a lot of John Elway in Bradly he has the arm and will run and could run over some of the smaller corners in the league. Mike has to figure out who he wants as the starter in denver but if they descide to go with Jay then they need to think about revamping there line for a drop back QB. If they donnt chane the line they need to bring in a QB like Jake or Brad
  • twhite · 3 years ago
You know, If jake was smart, and I think he is, he probably save alot of his money, and I think that after this awful season, where he got thrown under the bus by an arrogant head coach, he should retire and enjoy life. He deserves it. I think it would be kinda neat if he even stayed on as a coach since he know the offense so well.
  • JLo · 3 years ago
Jake will not get traded, no one will one to take on his salary. He will have to be cut after an intense Training camp battle.

Does your parents know you're on their computer? With spelling like that, you're better off sticking to a No. 2 pencil and your D'Nealian style, 1/2" ruling, dotted midline, red baseline, 1/4" decender line tablet. I'm sorry. Your 1st grade notepad.

    Let's review:
    1)It's 'Jake', not 'Jack'.
    2)Jay is 'an' untested rookie.
    3)It's 'Bradlee', not 'Bradly'.
    4)It's 'kept', not 'keept'.
    5)It's 'decide', not 'descide'.
    6)It's 'their' line, not 'there'.
7)It's either 'don't' or 'do not' and not 'donnt'.
    8)It's 'change', not 'chane'.
9)As I teach my 6 year old, always place a period after your sentance!!!

By the way, Bradlee was horrible, thus, the reason he is still out of work! Get over it, already. Now, go do your homework!!!

What??? Since when could John "Buck Tooth" Elway run over a corner like BVP. Come on Kyle use your head.
  • reality check · 3 years ago
    My goodness!

Change is hard folks, but come on. Playoff chances? How many times do we have to limp into a playoff game to simply get blown out. It is about championships, not just the first round.

Our playoff hope this year were crippled weeks ago. Every team knew to beat Denver you stuffed the run and made Jake throw.

-Throw for 3 when we need 7
-Run a sneak for 2 when we need 5
-Throw behind a rec. for a pick, when we need one more 1st down to ice the game, etc.

oh and by the way...All this bluster about Jake having a comparable record to No. 7 is a farce as well. Jake road a good team to that record, John carried many. Imagine for a minute if we could swap the two, what would happen? Denver would have never sniffed any playoffs in the 80's or 90's with Jake, let alone a winning record. But give a John this team over the last four years and tell me we don't have at least one ring if not 3. Imagine young John, say circa 1986-89, with this defense, (rested from not having to play 7/8's of every game), puhlease.....

It's time to move on. Jake is gone, (thank god) and Shannie's only mistake was not pulling the plug weeks ago.

Let the kid who played for a losing school and never sniffed a big bowl game, with the big arm have a shot. Hmmmmm, remind you of anyone?
  • 15 year Bronco fan · 3 years ago
I think Coach made the right decision. Denver's offense is based on the passing game. This may not make sense at first, but think about it... Shanahan loves to run the ball. This offense needs to stretch out the defense by passing in order to run effectively. Teams are stacking the box to stop the run because they aren't worried about Jake's passing ability. Cutler has a much stronger arm AND he has a better touch on the ball. He should be able to open up the defense and thus open up the running game that we need. Right decision.
  • SoTXBroncoFan · 3 years ago

I wonder what makes folks think that Cutler is immobile? See, that's the great thing about Cutler- he can move, AND he can throw from the pocket, AND he's got an incredibly strong, accurate arm. So stop with all the doom-and-gloom about the line and how it won't be able to protect Cutler; it won't be any different than protecting Plummer.

Anyone that blames Plummer's misfortunes and lack of skill on the COACH is just a fool. While Plummer's good record here *may* be IN SPITE of Plummer, you can be CERTAIN that the top 3 winningest team rank over the last 10 years is ONLY due to Shanahan. Shanahan put it together, period. No one else can make that claim- the architect gets the credit for the successful design, not the guy that hammers the nails while following the plan. Plummer had his BEST years under Shanahan, that's no accident.

Yes, Shanahan has his issues, but to credit Jake for his unparalleled successes here while simultaneously blaming Shanahan for his failures is just idiotic.

Loyalty is a good thing, unless it's taken to the point of zealotry.

SoTXBRoncoFan, please do everyone a favor and stick your condescending, know-it-all blather up your a#$ where your head currently resides. If you have something to say, say it. Otherwise shut your pie-hole.

That said, putting Cutler in won't help crappy play calling, predictable non-adjusting, one dimensional defense and special teams that are only short bus special.

The players are not the problem. It is the unqualified assistant coaches.

There are a lot of NFL teams that could use Jake. But I really hope the broncos keep Jake in the back role. Remember the days of Kubiak? I never worried when Gary was in. Maybe this could be the same thing. Jay goes down and Jake steps in. It's possible. Besides when have we even had a decent backup? KUBIAK!!!

Shanny was just being political and showing he does have at least some faith in plummer. Plummer's contract is far too high for a backup role, I expect Gus Ferrotte to be looked at once again, plus Shanahan is trying to keep at least the little value Jake still has in the trade market. If Shanahan was honest, no one would be willing to even give a 7th round pick when they could get him for free once he's released.

JEEZ People can turn on you in a heart beat. Have we forgotten what Mike s. has done for this team and this city he brought us two super bowls people...And yes he did get those with mr elway as his coach and i think elway is and was the best quarter back to ever play the game!! But that is besdie the point Mike has been trying to find him a quarter back since john retired. And now it is Jay cutlers turn to try. I for one liked jake plummer even drafted him for my fantasy team. But give jay a chance and lets see what he can do remember 1983??? And for god sakes get off of the coach in my opinion he can coach the broncos until he retires!!!!! Gary in tulsa oklahoma

End of the day, Jakes just made one mistake too many. Yes i agree he's missing Kubiak and Mike cant call plays for him, but thats got nothing to do with him flat out missing throws. On a side not ive noticed noone mentioning our WR's in this debate - the key to a good passing offence isnt the ability of a man in double coverage breaking free like say a Steve Smith; its the ability of No 2 receiver like Reggie Wayne and Slot receivers like Brandon Stokley in Indy to make the plays, dragging attention away from no 1 receivers like Javon. Jay is going to need Rod Smith and the guys in the slot to come up BIG for us to go deep in playoffs, or just to get there!
  • jonathon · 3 years ago
WOW....Lets look at something we all are quick to blame Plummer but where is the help. How many running backs do we have one receiver no more Rod and no tight end. As a quarterback what do you do? We may never win a big game with those players Elway had a hard time until he had some help. I'm fore Cutler but Jake is not to blame Shanahan is allowing the team to get this way!!!!
  • firstdownfemale · 3 years ago
Yes, I feel for Plummer as well. The Broncos are still in it at 7-4 and they abandon the vet for an untested rookie? Makes me wonder how much influence the media has on the decisions of the coaching staff. Similarly, I couldn't believe it last night when the MNF booth started theorizing about replacing Hasselbeck after he struggled in the first half. The guy has been out for a month and oh, by the way, it's snowing! I guess Kornheiser should just stick to ranking his "favorite bald guys." His commentating about Hasselbeck was just about as relevant as that.

If you are not aware of the (9 Pro Bowls, 5 SBs with 2 RINGS!) 3,407 yards that Elway gained on the ground, and the various CBs that he trucked while doing so- then it is you that needs to "Move on", apparenltly you do not know football!

Feel free to view the 1998 supebowl in which John scored one of the most spectacular touchdowns in SB history by runinng through/over two Green Bay defenders.

ELWAY NEVER SLID! He always got the evtra yards by taking on the defender and ususally falling forward.

Ugh! Enough history lessons... Take your panties off, Turn on NFL Network, or Classic ESPN, and try to learn the game called, "FOOTBALL."
(P.S. You better hope not to see us in the playoffs, because if you can barely beat us when we paly as poorly as we did, you'll have a hell of a time when we are playing average, and NO CHANCE if we play well.

    -FOR EVERYONE ELSE....
I have been a long time Jake supporter, but that KC game has made me say, "Let me at least give the kid a chance... maybe we get lucky and get some Romo, Tom Brady, or (early) Ben Roth. type production.

I do not know if it is the coaching (lack of) or if it is the intense media, or what? But the basic QB fundemantals for Jake, have gone COMPLETELY out the window. He through at least 50% of his passes off his back foot. NOT GOOD!

If Jake could get back to the basics of (QB) football, I think he could still be an all pro.

If Plummer is smart and I think he is he would be happy has a back up on a good team then a starter on a bad one. Once you get used to winning its hard to go back to losing. Going to a team that is losing all the time would be not a good decision. Sure he can make money as stater, Like in Green Bay or Philly but he might has well go back to Arizona then. Jake is a winner and wants to win, That why he came to The Broncos to stop losing
  • Matt · 3 years ago
Why would Green Bay want Plummer? Favre is past his HOF years but bringing in Plummer would not be a an upgrade. Favre will go for one more season beyond '06 barring serious injury.

Aaron Rodgers got hurt but Green Bay has not written him off yet.

Teams like Oakland, Vikings, or Detroit will be looking to trade. Vikings or Detroit make the most sense since Plummer and anyone traded for him would get sent to a different conference.

But shall we start the Plummer for Moss rumors? relax. I'm kidding.

Your team has one of the top 3 coaches in the league,an 7+ out of 10 defense, and a 5- out of 10 offense- only a fluke would garner a Super Bowl ring this year. Therefor the gamble with Cutler makes sense- Shanahan is playing the only hand that has any chance, so sit back and cross your fingers....prediction- San Diego goes on to lose to Indy in the AFC champ.this year, Cutler takes the Donkeys to the Bowl in 2010.

Jake Plummer is a bum! I can't believe at one point this guy was being hyped as the next Joe Montana. I had the guy's rookie card and thought it'd be worth something one day but it was just me playing into the hype. This guy needs to retire into the mountains. He looks like a drunk with that mustache. Jay Cutler is the future in Denver. Everyone is acting like he's over hyped but this is a guy who came from a school where he had no hype and limited talent around him and did good things. If anyone thinks he won't do well in this system then obviously they aren't reading their own comments when they're trying to blame the problems on the lack of surrounding talent. I can see Plummer ending up on the Raiders too, because Al Davis is an idiot. He brings in more washed up players than the SF Giants do.
  • Adam · 3 years ago
The best thing for Plummer to do would be to leave Denver. I'm a huge bronco fan but the fans are ruthless and ridiculous. As if it's Jake's fault for a pathetic line and a whopping 38 yards of rushing a few days ago. Iknow, I know, it's not just that game. Plummer is a classy guy-one of the few in that business-and the best thing for him is to leave all the bronco idiots and kick the crap out of em next year. Until we get a line that can pass block, no reason to run a Plummer type offense, or any for that matter
  • FootBallFan · 3 years ago
Last season Plummer was an MVP candidate most of the season because the offense was clicking. This season nothing is going right offensively. Cutler will have the same problems and Shannahan needs to realize that he cant just put anybody in there to run. You dont have a legit threat to beat guys in the secondary or in short yardage situations. The problems are more than Plummer. Look at Philip Rivers, having the ability to sit and learn, is excelling in his first season. Lets hope Cutler can move if he cant then Check Mate.

I can see Plummer in Oakland next year if it were not the issue with Brooks. I don't see Oakland closing the door on him so quick, but as they have shown in years past "you never know". Maybe Oaklands backup Tui will end up in Denver.

Since we're in the correcting mode ......

"Does your parents know you’re on their computer?" ~ may not show up on your grammar check but ~ "Do" your parents know you’re on their computer? ~ would be the correct version .... just thought it was ironic ....

On the Jake issue, I'm happy to see Cutler getting a shot on this team as I've been following his work in college and was picking him as the best NFL career of the top three when all's said and done.

Fire Shanahan when this foolish gamble doesn't pay off. He is letting the media run his team.

Jake will go to another team, then win a super bowl. Same thing happened to dilfer in tampa bay. it was cool when he came back to tampa as a raven to win....im sure jay will do fine, but if broncos special teams, and the running game does not get going, might as well focus on hockey and round ball.

I think that since the last few years (3-4) the offense has been very predictable, even when Kubs was here. Even I could tell what was going to happen and I'm not a coach. Imagine what a Defensive Coordinator could do! Let's hope Jay can get them going again.

If you have to dumb down an offense so your QB won't mess it up, why not do that with a young guy.

Jake Plummer can't handle pressure. It's one thing to try hard on a team that is a loser, it's another to come into a situation that expects to win. Some say look at his winning percent. "Figures lie and liars figure." The positive winning percent is the reult of being part of a great team, not from being a great player. When has Jake won a big game for the Broncos. Usually most of us are on our couch, hoping he doesn't screw it up. Sorry, but that's not being a big timer. When some QB's take the field with 2 minutes left there is a sense of hope. No sene of that with Plummer.

jay cutler never seen the kid play but you cant purely think that by switching qb's it will solve everything if anything the broncos were in position to win the afc west now im not so sure about that plummer like any other player has bad games the guy still got mad skills but hopefully cutler will step up and show he's got some too.

How's this for thought? Jake 'the snake' in a Green Bay uniform. Maybe even KC since Green's concussion reminded me of the fate of Steve Young? These QB's can't play forever. Although Green IS still productive... Look, some of you people are unhappy and want to blame Shana-han for the switch but the fact remains; Mike Shanahan had to dumb-down the play book in attempt to keep 'the snake' from unraveling, yet he still unraveled. But this time it was all because of the presence of a rookie named Jay Cutler. That's not the fault of the coaches. Jake brought that all on himself. We're 'currently' at 7-4 and in my book Shanahan must be the brightest mind in NFL football for producing the wins thus far. Especially with a interception (left handed throwing) prone QB.

Looking back, Jake Plummer wasn't a very good QB in Arizona either, so this shouldn't be surprizing!

Jay Cutler will have some ups and downs but I'll guarantee everyone in Colorado we'll have far greater chance to bring home more championships with a fearless 'rookie' with a cannon for an arm than a snake who curls up under pressure.

I just hope when the comparisons to Elway begin (which is rediculous) won't jinx him.

All I have to say is Alex Gibbs. How in the world did Mike let Alex go. Our running game went down hill after he left. I think that is a major contribution to the problems now, all the players Alex coached are now starting to retire, leave or get hurt and the change has started.

Jake Plummer, was a good Qb for a while. This season, he just hasn't been cutting it.. ever. We had a good winning streak there for a few weeks, but...Were they ugly wins? yeah... We got our touchdowns from picks mostly.. I am not saying that it was all plummers fault. The whole team needs to step up. They have great talent! Now they have a talented QB.. They will be unstopable!!
  • John Elway · 3 years ago
Everyone needs to wake up here and realize that Jake is the best person to win games for the Broncos. Why would his NFL experience be trumped by some kid who only won 12 collegiate games his whole college career? HOW DOES THAT TRANSLATE TO THE NFL? He wasn't a winner before the NFL so why would that change?
  • Jay · 3 years ago
I have lost some confidence in Mike with this move. It's not Jake's fault that the rushing stats were 38-220 last Thursday. Or how about covering Tomlinson with a D-End? Was that Jake's fault.
Why did they call ZERO roll outs in the San Diego game? Way to not play to the strengths of your players.
Maybe it's not the loss of Kubiak specifically, but I have to think having a former QB as offensive coordinator may have been more helpful to Jake than a former LB.

To all of you fans that are so against Plummer I think you should stop and look at the stats. Sure, if you compare Cutler's past 4 years in college to Plummers nfl carrer you might say that Cutler is the better QB. But if you compare Cutler's 4 years in college to Plummer's last 4 years in Denver you will see that Plummer is the better qb.
    Cutler-
    ATT:1242 COMP:710 PCT:57.2 YDS:8697 TD:59 INT:34
    Plummer's last 4 years-
    ATT:1594 COMP:944 PCT:59.2 YDS:11631 TD:71 INT:46
Now I agree that the past few games Plummer has played like crap but the blame shouldn't be based just on him. If you can't get any more than 38 total rushing yards in a game you cant't expect to win and some of the incomplete passes were drops by the WR. Although I do think Cutler is the future QB for the Broncos I think it is to early to start him. I think he needs to sit on the bench for couple of years before he will be ready to start as the QB. Our best bet until then is to leave Plummer in.

I watched Jake play every game in Arizona, and most of his senior year at ASU. Jake is the kind of guy who can put a team on his back and win the game in the fourth quarter, his comeback record will attest to that. He has done this for the Broncos also, but those games go forgotten. The bottom line is he is able to do these things when the town and the rest of the team believe in him, that has been spoiled here in Denver and I really hope he is able to find a good team in the future with a town that is hungry enough and not spoiled enough by a historic ghost, that they will appreciate him and allow him to flourish. I'm crossing my fingers that it's KC, even though I have been a die hard Broncs fan since he came here, I'd love to see him have success and that situation coupled with his familiarity of this defense makes a lot of practical sense. Adios cruel world of Denver fans...

It is funny to see everyone trying to correct everyone else's grammer, yet commit some typo's of their own in the mean time. Every one of us commits typos, they are inevitable. Beating people up over them is ridiculous....and attacking people for their misspellings is pointless. Everyone seems to know everything about what's right and wrong. To the 'Elway runs over cornerbacks' writer, Elway did dive into 2 Packers near the goal line, but he did not run them over. And it wasn't for a touchdown, he was diving for a 1st down at the 3 yard line, and achieved it. Who really believes that "Figures lie, and Liars Figure"? Did that guy just make that up? Stats are stats, they don't lie. Jake has in fact won more than twice as much as he has lost in Denver. The only question is, how many of the victories are directly attributed to Jake and his play vs. how many of the games would any qb in the league have won had he played in Denver? What would be an interesting stat, would be if someone could figure out how many games we won because Jake won them for us, versus how many games we lost because Jake lost them for us? Of the 7 wins this year, I can't think of a single one that we won because of stellar playing by Jake. Indy was his best game, and we lost it. New England was his second best game, but did he make any plays that Joey Harrington wouldn't have made? We have won a handful of games in spite of Jake's poor play. But I think 2 of our 4 losses are directly because Jake played so poorly that our Defense couldn't overcome it. Four interceptions in a game is tough for any 'D' to over come. I could go on forever it seems. But placing blame on Shanahan for this teams woes is astounding to me. Have these people not seen all of the statistical categories that Shanahan leads all other coaches in since he's coached here? Scoring, Rushing, Wins, Offensive yardage, Touchdowns.....maybe a couple more. Shanahan is #1 in every one of those categories over the past 12 years....please explain to me again how figures lie?

  • Bronco Billy · 3 years ago
A few comments, or perhaps some football 301 for comment #78 'Jay'.... We have been a GREAT rushing team for 12 yrs now, the fact that we rush for 38 yards againse K.C. is directly attributed to Jake Plummer's inability to spread the ball around the field and hit his receivers. Every team is playing 8 guys in the box, and Plummer cannot make them pay. Remember if you will the 2 passes down the sidelines intended for Javon Walker. Both passes were go routes, designed to open up the running game by forcing the safeties and corners to play deep, and not up in the box to help with run support. Do you remember what happened on those 2 go routes? Both of them overthrown. #1 rule when throwing the ball deep...don't overthrow it. If you overthrow the ball, your receiver has zero chance to catch it.....ZERO! If anything, you underthrow it a little, and at least give your receiver a chance to go up and get it. Javon will come down with it more times than not. So that is a HUGE reason we have no running game. Shanahan has said for years that any team can come in and shut down our running game, if they want, by playing 8 or 9 guys in the box. It's just that if they do that, you have to make them pay by going over the top. Jake does NOT make them pay. He's not a bad guy, or bad QB, he's in a terrible slump. Hitters go through slumps, shooters go through slumps. It happens. He needs to work his way through it. Shanahan does not have the time to allow him to work his way through it due to the demanding fans in Denver that we make the play-offs every year. As far as a DE covering LT on that play. That happens every game, with every team. That's a zone dog. Your hope, as a defense, is that you can get to the qb before he can find that mismatch. Against K.C., John Engerberger, a DE, was covering either a rb or tight end and the ball hit him in the back of the head. That is hugely common in the NFL, and not a bonehead play by Shanahan, or Coyer. There are no excuses for drops by WR's, that's a fact. And as far as the roll-outs go, on nearly every hand off, the coaches watch the backside de and linebackers to see if the roll-out is an option. San Diego must have had the de playing contain, thus taking the roll-out away from us. When teams do this, it normally will open up the running lanes as they don't have the de pursuing on the backside in run support. In essence, the defense can choose to either have their ends move down the line in run support, or stay home and take away the counter plays, or roll-outs. If they take away the roll-out, we should have a great day rushing (258yrd against San Diego) If they choose to play the run and have the de pursue, we should be able to roll-out and have success, but not run as well. See K.C. game.

Plummer will end up either in Oakland, Tampa, or Detroit. He could help the first two teams win an extra game or two but a battle with Kitna would probably be a dead horse, er, I mean heat. He will be released - heck, he'd be perfect in Hotlanta. The fans are used to the middle finger wave from their QB.

On a more serious note, I think Brandon needs more play. He actually reminds me of Rod Smith when he first broke into the league. It took him a couple seasons to get that consistency. Same for Sheffler. He's getting paid too much to be left off the roster. He showed he could catch Jay in the pre-season. He just seems to be in awe of starters. He needs to get over that "deer in the headlight" syndrome and he will start to produce.

No i think jake might stay with the broncos.

He was tired of loosing in Arizona and now he has gotten used to winning.

Moreover no job is better in football than the backup quaterback. You are always the most liked guy in town. In jake case if we get him that is, he will get close to one million dollars each year for holding the clipboard and also include the fact no damn reporter in denver will be going after his head :)

I'm a big Plummer fan and always have been since his days at Arizona State. The guy loves to compete and since coming to Denver has done so at a high level. I mean take a look at his record since becoming a bronco, it speaks for itself. After winning two super bowls, the fans in Denver expect dominance and your just not going to get that every year, the league is full of too many good teams. There is never going to be another John Elway, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Ed McCaffery, Bill Romanowski, Steve Atwater or Tyronne Braxton. Those guys were one of a kind and were all-stars at their positions. That team was built to win and it did so. I would agree with some comments made, and yes Plummer has had an off year, but you can't place all of the blame on him. Alot of it has to do with the play calling. Mike isn't as aggresive, since losing Kubiak and quite frankly some of the calls this year look like stuff you would see in pee-wee football!! I don't think throwing Cutler in this late in the season is going to solve all of the problems, but I'm not an NFL coach and I don't have to deal with those politics. I'm sure some of this decision comes from Bowlen as well. Yes Cutler did look great in pre-season, but that's why they call it pre-season. I mean he faced second and third team defenses, what can you judge from that. You get much different looks from those lines. Teams down the stretch are gonna come at him and come hard. I guess we'll have to see how far along he is in his progression. Plummer sorry to see this happen to ya, but I know you will find a home next season. Good luck and hopefully this move will shut the doubtfull fans in denver up.

Jake will not only be out of Denver next year he will be waived before the June deadline. There is no way he will take the pay cut needed to keep him on this team and they will not trade him because it will count more against the salary cap next year versus waiving him. The only way they trade him is to get a starting position player who can play now and is worth the hit to the cap. I bet he gets waived and picked up by Oakland, Cleveland or Tampa Bay.
  • Realist · 3 years ago
My only criticism of Coach Shanahan is that he didn't release Plummer outright rather than relegate him to a backup position. Much like Cortez burning his ships after landing, it would have sent a clear, unmistakable message to the team that there's no going back.

As to Plummer, well, his NFL days are over, period. Every other team in the league will consider him "radioactive" and not want to bother with the time and expense of signing him. While he might find a few marginal seasons in the CFL or maybe some European league, my advice to Plummer would be to do the honorable thing and retire...
  • SoTXBroncoFan · 3 years ago
Anonymous, thank you. You're the only fan in support of Plummer who has attempted to argue in favor of Jake citing statistics other than his winning percentage. Thank you.

However, I still must disagree with you. Why? How many games did Jake have to work with in comparison to Jay over the past 4 seasons? Now, in reviewing the #'s, it looks like the only tangible + for JP would be his completion %. His Yards per catch are less and his int/td ratio is higher. Which is the very reason we've been screaming for JC these past few weeks.

Bottomline, Jake has played like a rookie and has left the organization no other option than to play the rookie. As for those that think Jake will settle as a back-up, retire and/or coach, you're silly. As I said with the very first post, Jake will follow the money trail to whichever team is willing to have him as their starting QB. I would definitely like to see him become a Raider and watch our turnover margin improve!!!

By the way, my apologies for the earlier grammatical errors. Taught me a lesson!

This comment is for Plummer Fan Club Comment 9.

    ARE YOU KIDDING?!!!

Plummer a starter next year? Cutler not winning a game? That is a major laugh! Unless Cutler suffers a career or season ending injury that will never happen. I like Plummer and he deserves and will go on to be a starter next season for another team. However, the truth is he has always struggled in big games because of his inability to handle pressure. As he did in Arizona, he failed to make plays and consistently turned the ball over when trying to force a play under the pressure of an aggressive defense or when having to match points against high scoring offense. That flaw plagued his career and doomed him in Denver. Cutler is a qb who posesses better mechanics and skills than Plummer and who under Shanahans guidance can not only provide a more dynamic offense but who thus far in his college career has shown the ability to play well under pressure. Make no mistake Jake will win games and return this team to offensive prominence and Plummer will play for another team next year and probably find more success once he is no longer on a leash and has a defense that can make up for his occasional errors. Denver just wasn't the right fit for him.

Having followed Jake for a long time (starting with being his neighbor in the dorm for his freshman year at ASU) I've noticed that Jake is an amazing QB when his confidence is high. As soon as he is shaken up a bit, the confidence and performance drop more than with other QBs. While I'll still be a Jake fan (please don't go to the raiduhs!) I am curious to see what the rookie can do. I wish both of them the best luck now and in the future seasons, wherever they may be.

I'm a die hard fan and I rooted for Plummer as best as I could. But, you guys and your Plummer stats are hilarious. You proudly show his stats and fail to say how many playoff games he has won with the Broncos never mind in his career. You fail to say how many big games he played in, he threw interceptions. Not just his year or last .. his entire career. Your stats mean diddly squat. Gimme a qb with bad stats who can lead us to the championship and I'll take em every time. Go Cutler.. Go Broncos.. Bye Plummer thanks for all the great stats and heart breaking seasons!

Denver will go 11-5 or 10-6 with either Plummer or Cutler playing QB. I would rather watch Cutler go 1 and out in the playoffs and get some experience than watch Plummer go 1 and out and have to wait till next year to see what Cutler has. The time is now for Cutler(actually, it would have been nice if Shanahan would have put him in about a month ago).

Shanahan and the Broncos got lucky last year in getting to host the AFC championship and that is as far as they will ever go with Plummer. For some of the Fans thats good enough, but others would like to see Denver win
    another superbowl.
Cutler can take them to the next level.

If you are not excited about the QB change, you are just content to be mediocre. If thats the case go be a KANSAS CITY CHIEF fan, they are are 8-8, 9-7 every year and always choke in the playoffs.

    Teams Jake could sign with

    Most Likely
Tampa Bay---Gruden loves mobile QB's and Simms is a unknown for next year. Gruden's system is pretty complex so Plummer might not be able to beat out Simms etc.

Jax---Leftwich is going to be traded and Garrard is a decent QB but they'll want someone to battle him in training camp unless they draft a rookie. Jake would win this battle quite easily.

Buffalo---Losman is looking better but they may want to bring in a veteran to compete with him. Doubt Plummer wants to play in Buffalo.

Cleveland--Frye has looked terrible this season.

    Oakland--Doubtfull.
They will be drafting a QB in the TOP 5 and starting him. Brooks will be the backup.

Houston--They have committed to Carr so unless they want someone to challenge him I doubt they'd sign Plummer cuz he might beat out Carr in training camp.

Minni--Childress likes his mobile QB's...but he also doesn't like INT's.

    Highly unlikely but possible
    Detroit
    Phili

  • Trade? · 3 years ago
Trade: Plummer will not be traded. According to Bill’s “Broncos Mailbag, if he is cut, the cap hit is about $2.8 mill, while a trade would be a hit of $8.56 mill. Very simple math here.

Keeping him: If the Broncos are interested, it would surely involve restructuring his contract. Whether Plummer would do that depends on what his agent finds out about the market for Plummer (starting position and $). It only takes 1 team to make a decent offer, but it would take a team with an unsettled QB situation, no shot at Brady Quinn, and with a strong offensive coach. Cleveland fits 2 of those, but may not be ready to give up on Frye. Keep in mind that while the Broncos have given a lot of money for us normal folks, in NFL starting QB terms, it was not a ton. Is his stock any higher no than it was then? If there is not a market for him as a starter, it then comes down to whether the manner in which the situation was handled (leaks to the media) bothered him enough to make him not accept restructuring vs signing for backup money elsewhere.

The move to Cutler: Plummer is not an awful QB, but he is wildly inconsistent. I believe the pressure on him since the drafting of Cutler was a problem for him. He played hard, but he either was pressing or being too much of a gunslinger. I’m not so sure that the offense was any more limited because of Plummer this year than any other. Rod Smith cannot get open downfield anymore. The RBs are apparently not trusted as receivers since, besides screens, rarely are intended targets. The TEs seem either to not get open or drop the ball (with the notable exception of the Oakland game). Those things all limit the offense. Jake actually throws a good deep ball. Cutler will not change the things that limited the deep ball – no running threat and only 1 receiver that can get deep. Where Cutler’s stronger arm will help is on out patterns and intermediate-deep routes. As for accuracy, well, a strong arm is not an accurate arm. While I was just as frustrated as anyone else that Jake could hardly ever hit a receiver on a slant pattern in stride, look at
Cutler’s completion %’s in college – they are not much different than Jake Plummer’s during his years with the Broncos. Further, every pre-draft evaluation on places like ESPN, etc all noted that he was inconsistent in his passing mechanics.

Another factor in this is that, when Griese was elevated to a starter, Mike noted how he was amazed that someone had fully learned the offense in one year. Even if Cutler has been a great student thus far, I suspect he does not have the complete playbook yet. Hopefully he is adequately prepared to read defenses and respond to the blitz.

The difference for Jake between this year and last is that last year, he had to manage the game and the offense did not need him to be a playmaker all the time. This year, he has been put into the situation of having to make plays more often and while he has been up to it at some points, he just is not capable of doing it as often as the Broncos have needed to be 9-2 vs. 7-4. So Cutler will have to do that as a rookie. Big challenge. Obviously, the coaches think he has more potential in this regard than Plummer.

The only thing that bothers me is the leaks to the media that he was playing for his job and was going to be replaced soon, etc. Of course, every player is evaluated for performance every week. However, given the rampant media speculation since the moment Cutler was drafted, why add fuel to the fire? Any employee, no matter how well compensated, would be affected by that. Being benched is part of the game. Making your QB into a lame duck is not very smart, though.

That said, overall Shanahan should stick around as long as he wants. The Broncos have maintained a level over his years that very few coaches could have maintained. With the salary cap, the Broncos have basically rebuilt post-Elway and healthy Davis while being a legit playoff contender with rare exception.

It's no coincidence that the Bronco's offense has struggled since Kubiak left...Gary know's what he has in Plummer..my guess is he goes there unless Green in KC gets hurt or retires, Tampa is a solid possibility..no Green Bay...Favre is god...Personally I hope he goes to KC..I would love him to haunt the Bronco's and Shannahan...with this move "Little Mike" has bought himself a few more years..he can blame his losses on the rookie QB..Kubiak was the offensive genuis...Mike just took the credit...

Someone please explain to me why everyone is trying to blame the team play for Plummers performance. We're not talking about this one year or two years. Plummer has been inconsistent throughout his career no matter how much or little talent he has had on his team. How many playoff wins does he have on his resume? You're telling me that at no time in his entire career did he played on a team that was good enough to win more than 1 playoff game? Come on.. I like Plummer and he gave us his best but lets not get overly emotional and sugar coat his performance. His winning stats were a by product of the entire team, their big losses fell for the most part squarely on him for two reasons.. one he IS the quarterback and secondly, in most cases he either failed to lead his offense to enough scores or turned the ball over under pressure. That is the fact and no stats or amount of wins can erase it. I wish him luck and thank him for his effort but it change was overdue and I'd rather go down in flames trying something new than sitting there with a potential weapon on the sidelines watching Plummer blow another game in the playoffs.

An NFL player main survival tool to stay long in the league: Get W's after a game. Nobody is untouchable in the NFL and I am pretty sure Plummer is aware of it. He has a lot of shortcomings being a QB but I believe he always gave 110% when he was playing. He's a classy guy and he'll be okay whatever NFL team he would be playing next.

I wouldn't mind if Plummer ended up in GB next year because I think he would fit well in that organization and the city. But it's not going to happen because Favre is going to stick around for 2 more years. He has a young team around him that has a ton of potential. Favre knows and realizes this. Sorry Jake, the 2008 Super Bowl is going to be won by Green Bay but you won't be the starter.

    TIME TO SNAKE THE TOILET!
Thanks Shanny for watching last year's AFC Championship Game and realizing that Jake Plummer is completely incapable of raising his game when the chips are down. Plummer turns into a slapstick comedian in big moments of big games, and I say good riddance. Think about it...if Shanny hadn't traded up to draft Cutler we'd be absolutely STUCK with Jake Bummer for the rest of the season. Instead, we have hope now and in the future. Anyone who thinks we should keep Plummer and get rid of Shanahan knows nothing about football.. or about anything else, for that matter. Gee, Jake Bummer is the 29th ranked QB in a 32 team league. Not exactly setting the bar terribly high for Cutler. So why not start the rookie? Damn right, Shanny!!!

The quarterback change is a good move but to make a championship team, the Broncos will have to upgrade the Defensive Line. This group hasn't challenged anyone all season. The secondary can't cover anyone for six or seven seconds, and that is what this D Line is doing. Get a pass rush, develop Cutler and keep the D backs in tact and we will see world Champions back in Denver.

If you want to see the greatest game ever, watch Jake Plummer and the Cardinals whip the Aikman, Emmitt Cowboys in 1998. Also, watch Plummer bring his team back in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. He made a spectacular run to put the Sun Devils ahead. Ironically, David Boston and the Buckeyes came back to win. By the way, Javon is just getting back. Jake had to work with him when his confidence was not there. Remember Jake's wonderful performance against New England at Foxboro. He was throwing laser strikes to Javon. Now Cutler will benefit from a confident Javon. Do you think Jake had any time to throw in the AFC championship game. That first fumble was a result of poor blocking. The Broncos got outplayed all over the field against the Steelers. Remember that beautiful pass Jake had down the middle to Lelie I think it was. The Steelers just won the physical battle. The o-line and d-line gave in. I was in the eighth row. Jake also ran out of gas at the end from running around. By the way, Shanahan held Tatum out of the KC game when he was ready to go. He didn't put the best team out there just to let Jake take the fall and make the decision easy for himself. Shanahan called many bad plays in KC. Rod Smith made little effort on balls. Alexander is cool, but he didn't make athletic move for the ball. I have a feeling that Jay may do well, but I can see him really tanking also. This is the NFL. Guys are going to be much faster than he is used to.

Id also like to thank Jake for his effort over the last few years...now he should focus his efforts on keeping Cutlers shoes shined...Stats are stats. Denver fans expect more from their quarterback. We will never find an Elway but we need to find someone who is consistant. Hopefully Cutler is the answer. Also the "D" needs a wake up call..

Bronco Billy #87 is right AND wrong.

The right: Plummer can't take the pressure of an 8-in-the-box defense. Contributing to the Broncos rushing for a pathetic 38 yards.

Constrast Rivers with the Chargers. He attacks defenses that stack the 8 in-the-box to stop LT with effective passing.

Bronco Billy's wrong: There is a reason that the Broncos rushed for 258 yds vs the Chargers...

    No Merriman & no Castillo!

It'd be SHOCKING if the Broncos rushed for that kinda yds vs the Chargers in SD with Merriman & Castillo returning.

Lastly, I hope the damn Raiders take Plummer next year. If Al Davis is senile enough to take him good luck. I hate that team and their Neanderthal fans.

Respect the Broncos team and fans greatly...

I wonder if Shanahan's evaluation process he talks about for his players applies to him.
  • Evan · 3 years ago
The bottom line is Jake Plummer costs way to much to be a back up. I do expect a veteran because I would not like a young guy like Cutler to be backed up by an even younger rookie. Also, I have very little sympathy towards Plummer. Although he had a fantastic record here, it was the team that got that record, not him. I have a feeling that had Cutler, or almost any other QB, been in that position, we'd have a third Super Bowl.

    Shock and Awe!!!

You're all a bunch of spoiled cry babies stuck in the so called JE era. Let it go and move on. As for the stats and comparisons, give it up. First of all, college stats and NFL stats is not a comparison because the speed and tenacity level of the game is totally diferent. Second, to compare both Jake and Jay is also ridiculous. There is nothing to compare except JC's pre-season and JP's NFL career. So to compare the two is idotic. Jake has done what he could do and couldn't take his game to the next level. Jay Cutler has to prove what it takes to play on the real level. Let's see what happens. The change may hurt some of you B-fans but it was a good move and team is in need of a spark. The Broncos do not have a great pass defense and never did. It's horrific!
Everyone is always quick to pull the trigger when the coach makes a qb change. You're not the coach and quit your whining!

I am a Jake Plummer Fan. Jake has a lot of pressure from the media, a small offensive line, an inconsistent running game. Who wouldn't be pressured? It was a bad decision to let Jay Cutler take over. If Mike thinks Cutler can lead them anywhere this season, he is wrong. Look how all the other rookie Q.B's are performing. Cutler needs some time to learn. Look how amazing Carson Palmer, Phillip Rivers and Tony Romo have turned out by studying the game. It wasn't all Jake's fault. Arrowhead is a tough place to play and it was a bad decision. The good thing is that it gives the Bengals a better chance into the wild card if they beat Denver in 4 weeks.

btw. John Elway didn't win a SuperBowl until he was 37. The problem with Broncos fans are that they still are obsessed with Elway. Get over it. I'm not obsessed with Montana or Young. Give Jake a chance and a better line.
  • Plummer got the shaft! · 3 years ago
Good job Shanahan! You pretty much gave up on your team for the season after benching Jake. Why don't bench the rest of the players on the team that are not playing like they should! That loss in KC was not Jake's fault. I hope Cutler falls on his ass and Jake has to come in at halftime to bail him out! When Elway was bad they never benched him!!!!
  • GJ Broncos Fan · 3 years ago
Everybody on this site will think Shanny's a genious if Cutler works out and an idiot if he doesn't...

but it would probably be better to just wait and see what the kid can do. He hasn't even played a game yet and everybody is trying to analyze the move. You'd have better luck predicting the weather for the game.

My guess: Clear and cold. 28 degrees at kickoff.
  • ASU Alumni · 3 years ago
I cannot believe the Broncos are benching Jake after a 7-4 season!!! Maybe you should bench some of your receivers. And, if Cutler is as great as you seem to think he is, why didn't he go to a real school?
  • JustAFan · 3 years ago
I think this is actually going to a real test on Shanahan as much as Cutler. It could work, but Shanahan has been a master at working with established quarterbacks. Elway is his shining example of working with a QB at various career stages. However, he hasn't fared as well as a HEAD coach with those on the rocks or fresh out of the gate (Bubby, Griese, now Jake). Should be interesting to watch. I'm still a little bit in the Jake for now camp but if the switch was going to happen, now may not be all bad. Let the kid get some reps in with real games. Tough to accept, but the Broncos weren't really going to make it this year... the base is there, but too many holes have been exposed for this year. Get the kid some real experience, if we get somewhere great, but it puts Jay in far better position for next year.

A couple of more thoughts. This was mentioned earlier on, don't discount the impact of the loss of Kubiak. I think he was a good buffer between Jake and Shanahan and might have given him a wider leash. It also takes time for a team to adjust when losing that consistency. For the reason noted above, it would be nice to have a Kukiak type in there to guide Jay like Shanahan was early on for Elway. He likes the kid, but don't discount the need for balancing forces at the coaching level.

Second, losing Mike Anderson was equally big. He's not TD, but I'll take him over the Bell's any day.

Tying the two points together...remember when Gibbs left and came back and left again??? The O-line was shaky for a couple of years, got better last year and then injuries have killed us this year. It's all a big picture and to send Jake up the river is a tough one. I hope it's the right call.

For all the in Elway we trust fans (self included) seems to me that there was some mid career calls for a trade, misc. grumblings, etc. It's a tough town to play in, but if you make it we'll love ya forever.

I would like to see Plummer traded to an NFC team. That way he could face the Denver Broncos in a Superbowl. Although he never embarrassed Denver by losing a Superbowl 55-10 against the 49ers. It would be great if he could repeat that performance and get a Championship Superbowl ring in the process.

Hmmmm, as I recall Stanford is not exactly the center of college football, who could possibly graduate from there and be any good...some guy must have came from there... hmmm, I think his name was Elway or something.

I like Jake. I always have. But simple fact is, he wasn't doing the job. Does Jay have what it takes? Time will tell. Simple fact is, as Bronco fans, we have all been spoiled. Spoiled to the point where we can't see the light, are glasses are too thick. Elway is gone, has been long gone. He was a once in a lifetime player. We will never see another player like that as long as we live. So why must the next have to be John? There is no reason to even begin to compare anyone to thoes standards! Period! Maybe I'm crazy, but maybe, just maybe, if we were to put as much beliefe in this team and qb let alone all the other teams and qb's that came after John, maybe they would have done something special. Maybe, just maybe we have become spoiled rotten brats! Stop believing John will return. The "Duke" has left the building! Start believing this "team" will take us too where we as fans want to be! This is a team game. Last time I checked, John never won a Super Bowl by him self. He needed a team!

Jake should stick around just long enough to see if Cutler has a season ending injury ( it does happen...as in Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay) Even Mike said, Plummer is just one play away from being the starter. Hang in there Jake. You never no what can happen in the NFL. If Jay gets hurt, Bronco fans will be glad you're still around!
  • Jon · 3 years ago
I noticed that all the sportswriters who lobbied and pushed as hard as they could for Cutler to start are now tempering their comments about Cutler; according to them, Cutler now does NOT leap buildings in a single bound and veterans are in Cutler’s corner (yeah, what do you expect any of them to say in public? They are gonna let the kid’s performance behind a substandard line speak for itself).

As far as Plummer goes, now is as good a time as any since Shanahan brought Cutler in to replace him. Now Shanahan and Cutler will have to produce or admit failure. In which case, Shanahan will wish he stuck to his original plan to pick the big stud running back of the draft, Maroney. If he did, the Denver running attack would still be among the top in the league with Denver headed straight to the Super Bowl. And no, Plummer was not to blame for the last game’s poor running effort as the line did not block well even when KC had only 5 or 6 KC players in the box. You can’t even beat Detroit or Arizona with that poor level of line blocking.

The rest of the season will be exciting as it will show if Shanahan has lost his touch, Cutler is a gem or a lump of coal, and expose the true level of talent and desire of the rest of the Broncos team. Plummer haters, what will you cry about if the Broncos fall flat during the rest of this season?
  • Toney Hill · 3 years ago
I am a huge Elway fan but I think it's ridiculous for all that say we will never get another QB that can compare to him. I recall many bonehead plays Elway during the years. Granted he worked with a lot less talent in his earlier career.

I think it's very possible to acquire a QB that can win us a 2 or 3 Superbowls. Heck, we could already have him in Jay Cutler? Time will tell.

There have been more than a couple of QBs that have won 2 or more Superbowls and I'm sure there will be plenty more in the NFL future. I just hope we get another one soon!

Wow winning record. Good enough for the playoffs today. and you're benched for a rookie QB. That's gotta be a first.
  • John Miami · 3 years ago
Denver would rather cut Plummer than trade or keep him. His salary is way out of line with a back-up QB and the salary cap hit the Broncos would take in 2007 would be disastrous if we traded him. Jake will be cut, end of story. I also saw someone write that the Broncos should trade George Foster for a first round pick. Wow! We would be lucky to get a 7th rounder for him. Foster, like Plumber, will be cut in the upcoming off-season.
  • Fran Tarkenton · 3 years ago
Ok..here's what's going to happen. Jake will go to the VIKES next year and actually have a coaching staff AND Chester Taylor to make him look like the quarterback he can be. VIKES over the BOLTS (they've got an offensive line) 28-12 in the Super Bowl. Jake is MVP because he will be allowed to BOOTLEG! Denver will pick up Daunte Culpepper from Miami for a back up and will take over for the "kid" due to too many hits with the "o" line not providing protection needed. The Donks will then lose to the Raiders TWICE cuz Daunte and Randy Moss will both be crying for the good ol days when they were somebody!

GO VIKES...We'll take Jake in a heartbeat!!!!!

I personally loved what Jake brought to the table in terms of effort and dedication to his team. He was a large part of our success these last few years and it was sad to see it end the way it did. He played his heart out for us. That in mind, I hope the guy gets a chance to start in the NFL for a decent team and I wish him well. He certainly deserves another shot.

  • The Maine Fan · 3 years ago
#130-Toney Hill. We already have him. His name is Jay Cutler and he starts this Sunday against the Seahawks. The "D" and the "O" are rested and ready to go! They both have a renewed sense of worth. They will play their hearts out as thanks to Shanny for giving them hope and a future in J.C.I can see it now. 50 years from now a Small boy will be sitting on his grandads knee and asking him "Grandad Jay, when you were done they called your career the second coming of the great Lord Elway. But how did it all start?" "Well Johnny(get it?) it all started that night me, and what will always be referred to as "The Team" (i.e. The Drive, catch etc.) beat the defending NFC champs like it was nobodys business.
Thanks for all you tried to do jake. It won't be forgotten. But the future just got here and is so bright baby I think I may just have to wear shades.
  • Nate · 3 years ago
I am a Plummer supporter but he has struggled to raise his game to the next level so Shanahan is making the right move to go to Jay. With all the injuries this year its really not all Plummer's fault, it's a team game and he alone cannot overcome a lack of an inexperienced offensive line - that give him no time, new RB's everyweek and only one go-to receiver that can consistantly get open. Jay is the right move and will provide a spark for the offense but we can't expect miracles - it will take time. You never know what can happen in the NFL so Plummer better be ready. If Plummer is demoted going into next year I would love to see him stay and take a pay cut. Otherwise he better leave the AFC because with the right system I don't want to have to face him on a regular basis. There is a lot of season left, GO BRONCOS!
  • Bob, ex Bronco fan · 3 years ago
I think it was a great move going to Cutler. You should be getting high draft choices for the next few years. Remember, some players are winners and some losers. Talent doesn't always win. Guess which quarterback has been a winner. The good news is that Jake will be out of Denver. It's too cold and negative up there.
  • chiefsfan · 3 years ago
ex-bronco fan has it right. You are a bunch of negative Neds. Of course, little wonder... you are used to watching thugs in cleats...their zone blocking (crack back), steroid using, wife beating antics are enough to bore the most casual observer. Now, a snotty nosed kid who can't lead Vandy past middle Tennessee is going to lead the Buccos to the promised land? The air is way to thin out there. Get real folks! Time to load the kid, coach crazy eyes, and your fur coat wearing metro-sexual owner on the next Greyhound out of town.

Bob the former fan should consider that the Broncos have been winning in spite of Jake Plummer this season, not because of him. He peaked last year and crashed in the most important game of his career. Chiefsfan is just miffed that his team hasn't won a playoff game in ... how long has it been? Wah! Boo hoo!

Some are so quick to blame Shanahan. Send him out the door? Puh-leez. Put down the pipe! The only coaches in his league already have solid jobs. Who would replace him? Name me one guy? And be realistic because Belichick and Tuna are not going anywhere. Down with Shanny haters!

  • Bob ex Bronco fan · 3 years ago
Mitch, you think the Broncs will draft another quarterback next year or maybe pick up Kurt Warner from the Cardinals? At least he has won before.
  • Newly Inspired Bronco Fan · 3 years ago
The bottom line here is that Jake wasn't getting it done. Shanny has had his mistake and moves that I don't agree with (Clinton Portis for Champ Bailey). But that doesn't excuse the fact that Plummer played like a wrech toter on third down's. Always throwing into triple coverage. Either throwing over the receivers heads on crossing patterns or behind them, under throwing on fly routes and hitting the feet of dump routes. He never saw biting cornerbacks or a middle safety.
Jake Plummer failing in the Broncos system is like a kid failing special ed. The offense is designed for a medicore quarterback to have average success. Plummer either failed or had average success. No consistency.
A great Plummer game is when he throws for two touchdowns and 220 yards..and thats relying on Rod Smith to make some immaculate play in which he gets crushed in the endzone.

Isn't it time that we put in a quarterbacks that's average game will be 220 with two touchdowns and a great game will be 400+ and 4TD's? It's time. I like the move. Cutler has all the confidence in the world where everyone else is just wondering what Jake's going to do next to screw up.
  • Robby the Greek · 3 years ago
Character matters. Sure Jake is a good (not great) QB and can lead a team to the play-offs (and then fold). I lost interest in Jake after the obscene gesture and road rage incidents. I would rather suffer through a 4-12 season with Rod Smith at QB than put up with adolescent Jake.
  • James · 3 years ago
"Bob, ex-Bronco fan" was NEVER a Bronco fan. Bob, what you ARE is a Plummer fan, not a fan of the team. Maybe you and Jake can find a nice place together in whatever town he lands in.

Jake wasn't getting the job done, but I guess the only thing that matters to you, being such a fan of the team, is whether Plummer is the QB. If he is, you're a fan. If he isn't, you're an "ex-fan".

That Jakeraide must be very, very tasty.

Chiefsfan, don't you have anything better to do than trash the local team? And oh yeah, HOW many playoff games have you guys won again? Get a life.

  • Bob ex Bronco fan · 3 years ago
    Ooo, that hurt.
  • broncofan · 3 years ago
To post #144...I'd rather have a shutdown corner than a decent running back anyday. At that time, we had a proven back in Anderson, with others just waiting on the sidelines. True, we let him go, but the backs right now can be as effective. With a healthy Tatum back (he tore it up last season) and Mike Bell, coupled with Cecil Sapp and Cedric Cobbs (whenever he carries the ball), this 'committee' should be able to pick it up. Granted, starting different backs each week doesn't allow them to adjust and produce with regularity, but once Tatum starts this Sunday, Denver should be an interesting team. If Walker can develop the same connection with Cutler as Plummer did (I must say, starting Plummer is a double edged sword--you can get an awesome 13 yard run on a 3rd and 10, or an interception on a crucial drive in the red zone) then the Broncos will have that wild card spot wrapped up (that's sorta sad considering Denver was vying for a division championship maybe 2 weeks ago). The good thing is that Nate Jackson and Stephen Alexander (both tight ends!) have been spotted catching balls during games, so hopefully Cutler and throw to them and add Scheffler to the mix.

On an end note, I was watching Cutler throwing during warmups, and his throws have a lot better velocity and force than I have seen a Denver QB throw with since Elway. So that may result in big plays.

Good luck Plummer, wherever you go
  • Mitch · 3 years ago
Bob, I think Denver will first try cut a deal to move Plummer to a team that may start him. He's too expensive to keep around as a backup. What we'll get is anybody's guess. Van Pelt has landed in Houston, so I don't see him coming back. Special teams need a lot of work; if they don't play better in the closing stretch, the Broncos will go nowhere regardless of how well the rookie QB performs. Denver has made a LOT of special teams mistakes this year.

    Hey,

I think Jake felt betrayed when the broncos drafted Cutler, especially after having a pretty good season last year.Because Denver chose to draft a hot shot like Cutler, Maybe Jake was saying F--- the Broncos the whole season because he knew he was going bye bye anyway and chose to play the way he played this year. Maybe he is happy to be Mr. back up man because he knows he can go somehwere else and be the #1 guy like he wants to be??Jake DEFINITLEY wants to be a leader and not a follower.
