Broncos fans vent about loss to Raiders
KC -220 yards Rushing
Denver- 38 yards rushing
Good Luck Jay Cutler
His receivers DROP KEY PASSES...and he jumps on the QB.
Shanahan tell the truth -- oops, sorry, he wants to point fingers, so HE does not look bad.
I SAW THE DROPPED PASSES, Mike.
because this whole mess called a team is shanahan's fault
Six tonight?
Shanahan...after setting up the "win-lose-QB-scenario"...it's now your "a--" on the line. You've run out of excuses -- until you find your next one.
Oh, Mike, how classy to stage a shouting match with your QB IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME ON NATIONAL TV.
Mike...you go, too.
Right now, this team is frustrating as hell.
There is NO way that Denver will go to the Super Bowl with Plummer........Give Cutler a chance.
He acquired a lot of bad habits in Arizona and I thought Shanahan would be able to correct that, that Plummer had mostly just had bad coaching in AZ.
I see now that at least in part, it's just Jake. I still think he could have been a much better QB if the Niners had drafted him, but by the time he got to Denver, it was clear his lack of decision-making skills was ingrained and not going to improve. When you don't really have a running game (and sorry, you guys don't) the QB has to play mistake-free, and Jake can't.
I agree, Jake is done, time to see what Cutler has.
He needs to be pulled NOW!
That's it.
Everything else: offense, defense, special teams was awful.
I've been a Plummer supporter, but I guess it's time to change. I kinda feel bad for the guy, but that's the nature of the NFL.
But this was a sour team effort all around, Jake shouldn't take the majority of the blame.
1. Absolutely no pass rush. If Trent Green had been on target, we would have lost by a whole lot more.
2. Inability to run or stop the run. It's become sadly apparent that our stable of running backs are mediocre at best. Mike Bell runs hard but he's not the answer. Even when Tatum Bell is in the game, he's basically a one-trick pony. Get him around the corner to use his speed and that's about it. He gets arm tacked with ease.
3. Opposing team third down conversions. I haven't seen any stats but I'll bet our percentage holding teams on third downs is one of the worst in the league. When we do get stops, penaties keep drives alive.
4. Conservative game plans on offense. I'm not sure but I think we're missing Kubiak a lot more than anyone will let on, although right now we appear to be hamstrung by our mediocre running game and bad quarterback.
I could go on and on but you get the picture. We have major problems on both sides of the ball and a quarterback change isn't going to fix them. The season's a wash, let Jake stay in and get ready for the Cutler era next season.
Jake demoralized his own defense after they made the game-chamnging INT and he peed it down his leg. Yes, Mike Bell dropped a pass, but the other two were all Jake. His confidence is gone and so is Mike's. Love Ya Jake-- Thanks for the run last year. Hand the keys to gunslinger and help him learn!
About the game, it was not all of Plummer's fault. The defense was not what it was at the beginning of the season. They need to have that motivation back.
With little rushing yards, a game can't be won. You can't rely on your receivers alone. As far as I am concerned, the person to blame should be Shanahan. I would like to know what has gotten into him. You can't keep changing RB every other play. I think he is losing it.
Cutler may be a good QB, but realize that he is still a rookie and should probably get playing time, but don't start him yet. It is hard to be put on the spot and try to pull stuff out of your butt. Give Plummer another chance, I have faith in him.
However, this defense is quite overrated. Yeah, we played the best 2 backs in the league back to back, but that front 4 is a joke, the linebackers over pursue, and the corners can't tackle, except for Champ.
Great job abandoning the run again, Shanahan.
They may not have gotten far with Jake either, but there was at least the possibility that he could string some good games together, after all he's been doing this for awhile.
So now they are putting in a rookie qb, with no running game, no tight ends and 2 reliable receivers(only one of whom is a big time threat).
The rest of the season will be a "build for next year" experience...anyone who believes Cutler is going to come in and take this team to the Super Bowl this year is going to be greatly disappointed.
TE's not producing.
OL not producing.
RB not explosive.
WR need more than just 84.
DL please PRESSURE the QB
BUT.. Nonetheless, the criticism heaped on Plummer is warranted. The numbers don't lie. Way too many bad throws, often off his back foot into traffic. He doesn't have the arm for that gunslinger mentality.
Teams have played Plummer's rollout, forcing him to stay in the pocket, where is maybe a 50% passer. That ain't good enough to win playoff games.
Cutler is bigger, with a stronger arm, and a long history of toughness playing in packed SEC stadiums. Most fans have seen the kid play a little and know what I think I know.. He may be the next great Bronco QB.
That being said, we aren't in the locker room. Only Shanahan knows his mind. I suspect he will start Cutler, because the offense needs a spark. Plummer is a great guy, and I like his appraoch to the game. But, it's time to change.
Let the Cutler era begin.
In pre-season Culter made all of these guys look good, enter Jake and everyone looks like a bunch of idiots. I predict that with Cutler in the lineup the rest of the team begins to shine as well. I predict that every game will be better and better and then it will become obvious what a negative effect Plummer has had on the entire team
And, yes, he can do much worse than Jake.
This season is over and all the Broncos are doing is getting Cutler ready for next year. He's not taking us anywhere this year. To think otherwise is to end up disappointed in the "savior"
It seems that he has a mental confidence problem ever since they drafted Cutler, and he can't focus. He may be able to turn it around but to win the super bowl I don't think he can do it. Too much pressure.
The Broncos might as well start Cutler now against Seattle. At the worst he'll make mistakes and learn from them. Personally I think that he can keep the offense on the field long enough to prevent our defense from getting gassed. (Which is why we have lost our last 2 games.)
Start Cutler now and next year we know we'll be better.
Total agreement that this is now a rebuilding year. Some serious choices need to be addressed in the off season.
The reason Denver has no running game is because teams
know that Plummer cannot beat them if they commit to the run.
The guy is just wired wrong when it comes to making good decisions when the chips are on the table. With Cutlers arm, teams will defend the broncos in an entirely different manner. Who knows, the Bronco's might even find that they have a little more talent at reciever than they thought.
Exactly! They commit 8 in the box because Plummer can't beat them. It is ridiculous how he is playing. KC got 6 pts off INTs. That is 6 points that the defense held to a field goal in THEIR OWN PART OF THE FIELD. It was 16-10 in the 4th and Darrent Williams picks off a pass. The defensive did its job. Held KC to 1 td on a bad ass running game. It was Plummer's responsibility to get the ball down the field and he threw crappy passes. Bring on some talent...aka Jay Culter.
Better yet, let's listen to these anti-Shanny idiots: fire him and see if Dan Reeves is ready to give this coaching thing another shot.
Seriously- I'm excited about potentially seeing Cutler, but every one of these guys needs to step up, from Champ all the way down to Ernster (oops- maybe I shouldn't be so hard on an NFL kicker who CAN'T KEEP HIS KICKOFFS IN BOUNDS!!!) They're playing like they're dead right now. After ten days off, I think the Seahawks game will show a much improved bunch.
If you've given up, be fair-weather and go root for the Colts.
If you're dedicated, stick with the Broncos.
1) You can't blame him for the Defense.
2) You can't blame him for the lack of a run game.
3) You can't blame him for receivers dropping balls.
To that I say to you:
1) The D only gave up 19 points to a powerful offense...you should expect the O to put up 20 on KC! Not to mention that if Jake had kept some drives going, it would have kept KC's Offense off of the field!
2) You CAN blame him for the lack of a running game. If he had any ability to complete passes down the field, defenses would have to respect that, which would open up the run!
3) You CAN blame him for the receivers dropping balls...they have no confidence in him...they are probably dropping them on purpose to get his lousy butt on the bench, and finally, they are probably SO SURPRISED THE BALL HIT THEM IN THE HANDS that they don't know what to do!
Are next game is also nationally televised. If Jake makes fools out of us once again I am going to have to buy the "NFL Ticket" so I can watch the game at home because Bronco fans wont be allowed in public.
Also, I think Jake does not want to be quarterback just about as much as Bronco fans don’t want him to be quarterback. Did anyone hear his interview on Tuesday? He was quoted as saying;
"There have been people who have tried to run me out of here since I got here. ... One day, their wish will come true. Until then, sorry." --Jake--
Does this not sound like someone who sincerely wants to be a successful quarterback? --- and by the way Jake-- giving the home team the middle finger sure didn’t help your cause!!!! Go back to Arizona were mediocrity is acceptable.
Bye-the-bye
There is no coach I would rather have than Mike Shanahan!!!! Show a little respect people!
Let us recount. Biggest needs in last year's free agency market or draft??
1) Defensive Lineman who can pass rush
2) Running back who can run downhill and break tackles
3) Safety who can relieve Lynch
I'd say our actions or lack thereof are haunting us week in and week out!!!!
Yes, Jonny, as Jake continues to lead us, you'll continue to hold your breath and wait to sigh!!!
Aside from his winning percentage which I'll argue all day can not be singularly attributed and credited to Jake, like all losses can't be either, what aspect of Jake's game warrants him staying as our starting QB?
Is it his pass rating? That by the way is less than 70. 74.7 for his career.
Is it the fact he's a 10 year veteran? Because from where I sit, he's making wrong reads and can't look off a receiver or route to save his life...or job, for that matter.
Is it his completion percentage? 54.3%. Only 57.1% for the career.
Is it his TD to INT ratio? 11/12 and we both know how many pics have been dropped this year. 161/160 for his career.
Is it his average yards per game? 161.6 this yr. 210.4 for the career.
How about his yards per completion? 6.4 and only 6.7 for his career.
Bottomline, Jake will complete 50% of his passes for about 180-200 ypg and throw as many pics as td's. With those type of numbers for the season and career, he is NOT worthy of his $9 mil contract and certainly NOT worthy wearing our jersey any longer!!!!
Cutler is like a cross between Manning and McNabb. He's going to be very good.
1. no running game
2. poor field position
3. bad defense on third down
4. Penalities at crucial times
5. Bad play calling
6. oh yeah, Jake (...whatever)
You make Jake a fall guy for all of that ? Shame on you Bronco fans for being so ignorant about a TEAM sport. Javon is the only offense and the defense is three guys - Wilson, Bailey and Lynch.
The WHOLE TEAM needs work, not just QB
...Jake, chin up...there are other starting jobs awaiting you...
When we can't even run for 50 yards and jake is hurried on every throw and has at least FIVE plan dumb drops and LJ runs at will, ya wanna somehow blame jake?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
1. You got lucky beating the Chiefs in game 2.
2. You barely escaped an embarrassing lose in OAKLAND!
3. Your much vaunted defense has been exposed for the pretenders they are.
4. The "Shanahan System" running game is a bust.
And now...you want to go to the rookie quarterback?
HAHAHAHAHA.
Well the Chiefs will see you next system, nice to know you wont be in the wildcard picture.
Is it me or would Trevor Pryce, Mike Anderson, and Jeb Putzier have help the team last night.
Second: Shanahan's problem is not benching George Foster for Adam Meadows or Jake for Jay. The offensive play calling is from a scared little girl.
Show me a SuperBowl Champion QB with similar disreguard for "reading the field" - please, I beg you.
Jay won't save the season, but the sooner we get him REAL NFL experience, the better off we'll be.
Lesson #1: Packing the bags of the previous QB
Is Jay Cutler the answer? Possibly. Is Plummer the fall guy right now? Yes, without a doubt. In all honesty, if we had Payton Manning w/our pass blocking he would be a mediocre QB at best. After halftime it was clear that KC had no intention of blitzing anymore when their front four were able to create that much trouble. There are NOT a lot of QB's that can throw the ball effectly when the "lookout" block seems to be the technique of choice from your "O" tackles. i.e., Look a the Rams offensive after losing Orlando Pace. Their offensive production has been cut in half.
As a die hard Bronco fan, I can only hope Culter can throw a strike with unblocked massive D-ends greeting him each time he drops back. I refuse to hate on Plummer, but I think it would best for the team to give Culter a shot. What's the worst that can happen? Culter does horrible and Plummer comes back the next week MINUS EVERYONE TELLING HIM HE SHOULD BE WATCHING FROM THE SIDELINES? Who knows maybe after something like that Plummer could actually just worry about the other team instead of carrying the weight of everyone's disliking on each and every play.
Lastly, lets get off the Shanahan conspiracy. He is among the elite coaches in the league and does a great job year in and year out. With all the coaching changes taking place, there is no doubt in my mind we have coach worth standing behind. Trust me I live in MN and have to watch the idiots that have coached here. Be greatful and rest easy knowing we do not have a "Mike Tice" leading our team into battle each week.
The season's not over yet! We still have five games left with one more against KC.
We have to get Cutler in the game to see if we can get a spark. Are we as Bronco fans, supposed to support this guy who has gotten us nothing. I don't feel sorry for him. In most lines of work when you continue to fail, YOU ARE FIRED!!!! Bring on Cutler, Bring on the Chiefs and the rest of the NFL. I am still on the band wagon becuase we are going to make a switch. Dont let the door hit you on the way out Jake.
You're just fans. Why do you think you are qualified to be coaches? You are all screaming for a guy who has never taken an NFL snap. None of you have ever seen him play against a first string defense. How do you know so much? Maybe the coaches should watch more TV so they can be as smart as you. You bashers don't even know as much as any coach on ANY pro team. Detroit, Oakland, Arizona or any other team has coaches who know a hundred times more about football than you.
Watching TV and listening to Madden do NOT make you an EXPERT!!!!!!! You are just wannabes living your fantasies through your football team. If you don't like what's happening, turn off your TV and get a life of your own. Maybe you don't need a QB change as much as you need to just grow up!
I live in Phoenix and have suffered forever with a bad team, which Plummer was a part of in the past. He hasn't changed much from when he was booed down here. Denver has a far better team, coach and system, just not all of the right players yet. A more aggressive D-coach might also help along with some more talent on the D-line and safety. Special teams coach should be fired without question, as that squad is really bad.
Sorry, you are wrong. Don't ignore the proof the Cowboys just provided to blow your assertion out of the water. They pressured Manning and beat the Colts. Peyton could not perform any amazing feats like he did against the Broncos because the Cowboys defense came at him and pressured him all game long.
Its amazing armchair experts can blowout such nonsense. Even Elway who always say "winners always find a way to win." Well Elway did not walk on water and got stomped on in his first 3 Super Bowls - he didn't find a way to win. He and Broncos finally won some Super Bowls after it got a monster O-line, stud running backs, and a defense that shut the other team down and wouldn't let them march down the field and score.
But if it makes you feel better, keep blaming Plummer for all the bad in the Broncos. Yes, he is under-performing: He has zero tackles, zero QB sacks, zero ball strips, zero interceptions caught, & failed miserably at returning kicks. He never once stopped the other offense from scoring and catching up to protect the leads he got the Broncos.
In reality, this year the Offensive line is lousy and can't block. The running backs can't run without the blocking. The defense can't pressure or sack a QB, the defense can't defense the pass. The defense can't stop committing penalties that help the other team keep their offensive drives alive. The coaches call lousy plays. Why they only rushed the ball 16 times for a 2.4 yard average against KC is all you need to know that the run game is at the same level as the AZ Cardinals.
But if it is easier for you to survive your day, blame Plummer for everything that is wrong with the Broncos.
All of these events illustrate Jake's downfall. Without a doubt, God gave him talent. Unfortunately, he never learned the discipline that it takes to be a consistent 'great' quarterback. Elway, Farve, or Marino would never have been caught consistently acting this way off of the field.
If you remember, last year, Jake did not participate much in the New England playoff win, and participated greatly in the Steeler game loss. This is due to his lack of discipline which after this many years in the NFL, he should have obtained. It is sad because again he has the physical ability, he just lacks the menntal strength to be consistent.
I do agree that it might be more interesting to watch Cutler at this point, but it's a lot to ask a rookie to step in and take a team to the playoffs (not that it hasn't been done... ) And this is, despite a bad last couple of weeks against tough interdivision rivals, this is a team that can still make the playoffs. It's in their own hands. Kizsla is right today - whatever Plummer's problems, Shanahan's ill communication is leaving him dangling in the wind and the rest of the team distracted. Whatever he does, I hope he does it the right way, and sticks with it.
Fact of the matter...Denver looked GOOD early in the season...injuries have severely hindered that look, and now seem to be spiraling downward with Plummer at the helm. No, he's not the ONLY reason this team has dropped TWO of the most important games THIS season (in a row), but he sure isn't helping...and as has been said, these "rants" are YEARS in the making...
Oh, by the way, what makes "Ed" such an expert Critic?
I will keep blaming Plummer because he deserves it. Also, Dallas beet Manning with the offense as well as the defense. You can not expect Denvers Defense to make up for Plummers lazy play game after game without it taking a toll both physically and mentally. Also, as you so tactfully put it, Plummer = Zero. The opposing defenses I am sure am licking thier chops when they face Plummer. All they have to do is focus on stuffing the run and then just wait for Jake the Fake to blow the game.
To bad Jake the Fake does not have your passion for the game, if he did we would not be talking about this right now. And once again, you can not expect the defense to keep the same level of play week after week, quarter after quarter without suffering some fatique and more importantly, injury. Also, you do not need to be a professional car washer to know the car is dirty and it is more than just the fans who are bashing Plummers play. I have not heard any professionals as you put it defending Jake the Mistake, only angy guys named ED
I like Jay Cutler as our NOW. I normally disapprove of mid-season key player changes, epically regarding those with captain status but it is time to shake things up and I think Mike set this up with the Mike Bell and George Foster seatings.
Do I think Jake is the sole problem? By no means! He is a key component though, and can not be overlooked but if a team blows a heavy lead there are other places to look for problems. I hate to criticize since everyone's a genius after the fact but I think Coyer needs to get his imagination flowing a little bit more, I don't think it's too hard to pick apart a 3 deep zone, which we use too frequently and were burned against Indi, SD and even a little in KC because of it. Furthermore there needs to be a bit more discipline in the linebackers, especially Gold. I was at the Den-KC game yesterday and watched Gold get out maneuvered by LJ quite embarrassingly and frequently; he just missed tackles while flying by his targets. He's a good blitzer, fast and decent in coverage but the core component is missing: tackling!
It's too easy to defend a small line run game with a mistake prone QB. There needs to be a reason to fear the passer and that is where Jay comes in but the pot needs stirring on defense too!
Stick to one back.
Be more aggressive with play calling on defense in the second half.
Culter can't do any worse than Plummer, and I'm a Plummer fan
At least give a running back two games not two plays. shanahan is going crazy switching out backs like he has. Let somebody get in a groove. (I think it should be Nash, he's the only one over 220lbs this is the NFL not JUCO we need a big bruising back)
Why adandon the blitz in the second half of games and let these quarterback sit back there with all day to pick us apart. We need to taste blood in the second half and blitz. Maybe then we would get more turnovers like we did last year. The defensive play calling is weak.
I think it all starts with the coaches, and they should take most of the blame.
Go Broncos! No matter what.
The receivers use them as deep threat, tight ends use them for blocker and middle field threat, 2 running backs use them as wipe out and run.
He has no talent, no arm strength, but he can run. cannot run and throw 20 yard pass. I rather lose with cutler, a chance of winning every game, than have no chance of winning, because we always have to wait, when will jake the f-up will show up and lose the game. It's only a matter of time. He brought the cure from ARIZONA,ask Dennis Green, or new quarterback Matt.
Blitzing will not help on defense. The reason we were dominating on D the first half of the season is because we WEREN'T blitzing--just playing conventional defense and letting players play. We have some of the best defensive players in the league and when they settle down and play their position, NOT try to out-blitz scheme the opposition, we shut them down.
I call holding the Chiefs to one TD at home pretty good D. And when they only get three FGs in the second half its time for the offense to get into gear and answer with ome TDs. But heck, we couldn't even match punches by getting 3 every time.
Second half posessions for Denver: Touchdown, Punt, Punt, Downs. Plummer actually played better in the second half if you look at the stats. But when your RBs only rush 5 times for 8 yards in the second half, how can you expect your QB to convert 3-and-10 over and over again?
The defense played well enough in the 2nd half, Plummer held his own. It was our running game that broke down--the result of Shanahan flip-flopping and playing musical chairs with the depth chart every week. Why can he not just pick a back and stick with him? One week one is starting the next week the same guy is deactivated. What is Shanahan doing?
Just food for thought!
Also, remeber this saying heard in Colorado in the 1980's? "there's a right way, a wrong way, and an El-way"
Just more food for thought!
no defensive rush......bad
change QB..............maybe
Is it me, or has eveyone not noticed that our new offensive coordinator has forgot that the Denver Broncos RUN the ball then Pass to our Tight Ends which in turn usually opens everything else up
Maybe Denver's biggest problem is Coaching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shame on you for throwing Jake under the bus.....wrong time & wrong place
Marti of SoCal
Where does that leave Jay? Will he do better w/o background leadership like Jake had last year. I guess with his status as a #1 he just better step up. No choice. Mikey needs to sail through some rough waters. Start now and get if started now.
MR. Nash looks like the real deal. Let's see more of him.
Plummer doesn't rush the passer or make the missed tackles.
Denver may not win another game this year, with Cutler at the Q.B. Chuck
Speaking of Griese, you pathetic Denver fans will get to watch Brian win the Super Bowl this year for the Chicago Bears. Maybe Shanahan should sign Wrecks Grossman.
Bronco Fans-Quit whinning. The Broncos are stuggling however they are in the playoff hunt. We are fans and should support our team win or lose let the coaches coach and the players play they make the big bucks we dont. In regards to who will start at quarterback next week who cares? Shannahan (one of the winninest coaches in the NFL) will start who ever he feels will win more games. PS. I love Plummer however did anyone see how many open receivers he missed and under or over threw. Lets support who ever is on the field for out team the season is just beggining. From Fresno CA GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!
You are calling for Coyer's head and seem to have the answers for the defense. Once they fire Coyer why don't you send in your resume to be the Broncos defensive Cordinator.
LOL.....LOL.....LOL
For those of you who were Broncos fans BEFORE 1998, you may recall that we've been through this before. God bless John Elway's pigeon-toed swagger and the two Lombardis that are under glass at Dove Valley because of him, but this town was ready to string him up in the early 1990s. Then a guy named Shanahan came along and took some sixth rounder named Davis and got the job done TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!!
So what's my point? If Cutler comes in next weekend, let him play like the rookie you should expect him to be. Not everyone will have a Roethlisb (oh, hell, you know who I mean) kind of season as a rookie. Just remember that #7 faced the fire MANY times from these media geniuses and uneducated fans and came out on top.
Shanahan will have them there again- just be patient.
If you're not patient, go root for the Raiders. At least you KNOW they're going to be consistently terrible.
Anyway, better to know now than have to suffer through another embarrassing home playoff loss, which should never ever happen in the NFL.
Cutlers time will come and hoepfully he'll be a great QB
Lack of a good workhorse running back, resulting in only 38 rushing yards against the Chiefs was the reason why Plummer was pressed into too many third down passing situations.
That being said, it was troubling to hear Cris Collinsworth's critique on Thursday night - that he didn't think Plummer had enough arm strength to complete a third down pass to an open receiver.
There are some quarterbacks talented enough to overcome flawed, unbalanced offenses, but unfortunately, Plummer is not one of them. The past two games, he has been mistake-prone at the worst possible times, which also wears on a defense. Even quarterbacks with a lot less athletic ability who've won Super Bowls do so because they do not beat their teams with interceptions, fumbles and muffed snaps.
The Broncos should have made a quarterback change for the second half of the Chiefs game. I hope they do it soon, so they can put this controversy to rest. If Jay Cutler is as good as everyone seems to think he is, the team can only benefit in the long run.
Putting in rookie goes against all odds. Consider this:
"First-game starts for rookies have been hard. In 1998, Peyton Manning started in Week 1 and completed 21 of 37 passes for 302 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions and lost 24-15 to Miami. For the season, his team won three games and lost 13.
Troy Aikman is one of several quarterbacks to struggle in Year 1.
In 1989, Troy Aikman started Week 1 and completed 13 of 29 for 193 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. For the season, his team won one game and lost 15. Aikman finished the year with 11 touchdown passes and 18 picks, and went 0-11 as a starter.
John Elway in his first start for Denver against Pittsburgh completed 1 of 8 passes and had one interception. (That was the game when he accidentally lined up behind one of his guards.) The following week, he was 9 of 21 for 106 yards. Elway started 10 games and was 4-6, with seven touchdowns and 14 picks with a 47.5 completion percentage.
Dan Marino, in his first year, had a 7-2 record with 20 touchdown passes and six interceptions, but the Dolphins had finished 12-4 the previous season.
Phil Simms started 12 games as a rookie in 1979 and won six. Simms completed 50.6 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. The Giants finished 6-10 in 1978 and 1979.
Does anyone - (besides Shanahan) think Cuttler will do better that these Hall of Fame QBs?
Jack
I don't want to sound simplistic, but ultimately, it just is.
They can't pass because Jake is off target. They get no YAC because Jake can't hit anyone on the numbers. They can't bootleg because defenses are committed to containment.
They can't run because defenses are selling out agianst the run, 8 and 9 in the box. They can't run because they can't pick up a 3rd and 5, so they can't get rhythm or tire down the defense.
They can't play action pass because they can't run.
And they can't play D anymore because the D has hit the wall (by the way, before we get TOO down on the defense, holding KC to 19 on the road on National TV after your QB throws an early pick in scoring position is not too bad). The D has hit a wall because they're on the dang field all day long, week after week, all year long, against tough offense after tough offense. The D has also hit the wall emotionally because they have no more faith in Jake Plummer.
And all of this is CORRECTABLE. All it takes is one thing: to successfully drop back and pass against a eight and 9 man run-oriented fronts.
And I am convinced Jay Cutler can do at least THAT. This will force defneses to play honest, opening up the running game. At little ball control gives the D a chance to recover, and we have a shot.
Not a great shot, but a shot.
I don't know if Cutler is the answer, YET. But he gives us a chance.
There is NO WAY you can expect to win a Championship:
- When your offense is one of the worst teams in the NFL on third down conversions
- When your defense is one of the worst teams in the NFL at stopping third down conversions
- When you have one of the worst special teams in the NFL giving opponents field position
- When your QB fumbles or throws interceptions in critical situations
- When your running backs are constantly traded like baseball cards
- When you only have one reciever that is a threat (Walker)
- When your tight ends average about 0.33 catches a game between all of them.
- When your defensive line can’t stop the run or pressure the QB
- When your defensive backs give 15 yards cushion but the opposing team only needs 5 for a first down
- When you’ve lost your swagger because you’ve been humilitated on National Television and all your fellow NFL brethern have had a chance to see you dominated in the trenches, on pass defense and on offensive line.
Looking at the schedule and our recent downfall, I would guess that we may win two of the next five games, three if we’re lucky. I don’t think 9-7 and probably 10-6 won’t even put us in the playoffs. KC and SD have a slightly easier remaining schudule than us and they are picking up their play not faltering and sputtering.
