    What, you think all those free agent signings were going to be free? Anyone notice all the restructuring of contracts going on? Notice how little D.J. Williams has played since the Broncos reacquired Ian Gold? He's needs to be on the field. Don't get me wrong, Wilson has been Mr. Defense for Denver and ultimate all pro, but his injuries have been ill-timed the last couple years and let's face it; we can't afford him now. Just hope we get a decent pick.

    Get what you can for him.

    How long has it been since he or any of the LB crew made a game changing play? All this talk about how great Denver's LB crew is a bunch of hooey.

    That said, Coyer's scheme might of had just a bit of impact on thier play. In this day and age of pro football, eight years is a good run with one team!!

    Time to move on.

    Trading Wilson would be a huge mistake, especially for a mid-round pick. I don't care how old he is, players with his playing ability and remarkable leadership are scarce. Maybe for a first round pick, but even then I wouldn't do it.

    STUPID. You would get ride of the best linebacker core in the NFL. How STUPID to get ride of a guy like that unless you can get a top LINEBACKER FOR HIM.

    I really hope they don't. He is still very capable. If we trade him, and lose Rod, then the team loses the heart and soul of the team. Character is necessary for a championship.

    What do do you think they should do? I think they should just trade Al to the giants and get a devensive end because that is there weak point and just hope we can get a great linebacker in the draft. Maybe we can get another dj williams and don't get me wrong Al is a great linebacker but we are paying him too much and we can't afford that.

    Dre Bly and T. Henry should be traded to the redskins for Clinton Portis. Al Wilson is important for the broncos like Ray Lewis is to the ravens so it will be stupid to get rid of him. Broncos should trade rod smith, ian gold, and daniel graham (because Broncos have a young Tony Gonzales in Scheffler) for a nice draft pick so we can be able to get a great DE!!

    I agree with Shanny 99.9% of the time. But this is dumb. Not Big Al. No way. If a team blew your socks off with a deal then anybody can be traded. Thats not this. Ask Al to restructure and show him the respect the man deserves. We're talkin core here man. Mabe we shouldnt have thrown so much cash to a 30 year old running back?

    He is a defensive, and Team leader and has been Mr.Bronco the whole time he has been here. I think we are better off with him than without him. With that said I am guessing he has refused to restucture his Contract? any info on that?

    5 PRO BOWLS!!! He is the best player on the team minus Champ Bailey. Get rid of Lynch or Gold if you need cap space. We are paying Daniel Graham the same amount. Sorry but a MLB "QB of the D" is far more valuable than a TE! Who would you rather have Antonio Gates or Brian Urlacher? Don't ruin a great off season Shanahan!

    9. We cant afford him because we are giving a backup blocking te 6 mill a year!!! Who would be more valuable to the Broncos next year, Daniel Graham when we have 2 capable te's already or Al Wilson who is backed up by injury plagued Nate Webster? I have no doubt though that if they do trade him they will make a great trade because thats what the Bronocos do!

    Do you think that Baltimore would trade Ray Lewis or Chicago would move Urlacher to clear cap space? Maybe Al is not quite as good as those two but he is darn close. I was thinking that all these Free Agents would make something like this needed. I am not sold on these FA signings being worth it. The Redskins have been signing players to big money deals for years and it has gotten them nowhere. Character and Leadership are the rarest commodities in this league and Al has both, in my book he stays.

    I am a NY Giants fan from upstate New York and wanted to say thanks for this guy. Wilson is a beast and will help us out a lot, especially with Arrington now gone. If Tuck is the one that you guys end up with, I hope it works out well for him and your team. Best of luck to your Broncos in '07!

    Listen, Al Wilson is good, but he's getting older, and with DJ Williams ready to step up, we can afford to get rid of Al Wilson. Don't get me wrong, I love Al, and would rather not see him go, but it's not the worst thing in the world. With all the free agents we acquired, there was no way we wouldn't lose any players ourselves. Hopefully we get something good in return for him, possibly Justin Tuck. I'm not worried about the LB crew next year, with DJ and Gold, it'll be just fine.

    Al Wilson is now gone!!! All I know that is these newly aquired free agents better step it up and have career years!!! I mostly mean the (2 strikes againtst him already) Running Back and (too highly paid in my opinon) blocking Tight End.

    Shanny, year in and year out I trust that you make sound judgements...I hope you get good compensation for #56.

    Regardless of what happens, I will still bleed ORANGE...Go BRONCOS!!!

    Departing with Al Wilson WOULD BE A HUGE MISTAKE. He's every thing the Broncos need to be as a team strong, determined, desciplined and has strong desire. He bleeds Blue and Orange. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is Wrong. Al Wilson is proven, enough with the experiments ... Plummer, Brown, O'Neal, Lelie, Greese. Other than Plummer bein dumped, it has been a rough off season, this would absolutly ROCK The Bronco Nation. Trade him for who? Another unproven player, another season down the drain. Tired of finding excuses for a team underachieving. Broncos have a solid defense, lets not forget it was the offense who didn't show up for half the season. And that Snake has been extermenated. Shannahan get your head out of there! NO TRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Smart move, all the doubters should go back and look at last seasons games again. Al Wilson, at one time was one of the better LB in the game. His play last season was no where near pro-bowl caliber. What can you say .

    I love Al Wilson. I was shocked when I first heard about this, in total disbilef that we would even consider trading the captain of our defense. But lets be honest and take our feelings out of this for a monment. Our pass rush is atrocious. We are in the bottom of the league in sacks. You can't get someone for nothing (unless maybe you're the Pats...they manage to do that pretty well). We want to imporve the pass rush, we trade Al Wilson. Other LBs will step up, esp DJ. I still don't like it, but I trust Shanny's and Ted's judgment.

    As great as Al Wilson WAS years ago we need to be honest about his injury problems and his declining physical skills. Al played his heart out and may very well have played his body out. No one can play for 8+ years with the beatings that he has put his body through. The last 2 seasons he has been constantly hurt and not making the big plays that we have come to expect. It is foolish to hold onto a guy based on reputation when he cannot deliver at the same level any longer. Don't get me wrong, I like Al Wilson and will miss him but it is time to move on while he still has value. Denver won 2 Super Bowls with LESS talent at OLB/MLB than thye have now. Just because Al Wilson will be gone doesn't mean that someone else cannot step up as an emotional leader of the D. Age happens and so do business decisions. Wouldn't you rather remember Al Wilson as a good MLB rather than an often injured and slowed down version that he is becoming now? Oh yeah, NO MORE BROWNS D-MEN, Mr. Shanahan!

    I cant believe the team would trade BIG AL!He is a great leader that brings it evey game.Last year after a game the man stayed 45 min after every one had left signing autographs and takeing pics with his fans.This is worst than Steve Atwater playing for another team!Ask him to restucture his contract.Dont tade your leader for a player named tuck who has 2 career sacks and move up one spot in the draft.Dont do it broncos.

    I can't believe this, Al Wilson is the face of this franchise. My problem has to do with Bates, whose defense is supposed to be based around fast linebackers. The loss of Wilson scares me.

    So did the trade with Bailey for Portis and that worked out for the best. I just don't want the Broncos to become another Washington Redskins, buy up big name free agents but lack any leadership to put together a championship run.

    I wish Al Wilson the best and he will always be a Bronco in my heart.

    This is a huge mistake. Knowing that Daniel Graham and Travis Henry would come with a price, giving up Al Wilson is too much. His leadership is priceless and is still one of the top 5 linebackers in the league. We'll miss you Al.

    This is a mind numbingly stupid move. Stupidity of epic proportions. Al's played for the last 4 years shedding offensive blocks as well as moving the lackluster D Line off of his lap five yards down field on almost every play. We should nickname our D Line the dumptrucks because they just keep backing up all day long. Now a DE does us no good because teams will just run over center all day long. It will be poison in my eye every time LT or Larry Johnson gashes us for 10-15 yds down the middle. Roll the dice for a DE in the draft but at least keep the one solid and consistant performer out of your front seven you twits. Pull the plug on this deal. ABORT ABORT!

    I do not understand this. Why don't we look for cap relief at Gerard Warren, our $6 million dollar ost overpaid siging of last year. How about not paying Daniel Graham more than Antonio Gates, Algea Crumpler, and Todd Heap. Al is the anchor. He will be missed on and off the field. I would rather have Al than every offseason acquisition made this year. This an awful trade no matter what it brings.

    The players the Broncos picked up this offseason gave myself and probably most other Bronco fans a feeling tht we were Super Bowl bound again. Getting rid of our team captain and spiritual leader puts us back ten fold. You might as well bring Brian "Dink" Griese back to run the offense! As a life long Red Sox fan, I am used to this kind of deal though!

    This is a terible move. If we needed to save money, why don't we get rid of the most overpaid DT in the league: Gerard Warren. I thought it was a mistake last year letting Pryce go in favor of giving the money to Warren. And who produced?? Then we pay Daniel Graham, a backup, more than Antonio Gate, Agea Crumpler and Todd Heap. Al is the anchor. He is more valuable than every offseason acquisition we made combined. Good job NY, you got a hell of a player

    This is one of the worste moves ever. What are we getting in return??? Last year we let Pryce go for nothing and he has a fantastic year for Baltimore, now Wilson??? The offensive moves this off season have been good but this is rediculous. Lets add two worthless D lineman that aren't worth sand and get rid of our defensive captain, our defensive anchor. I have been trying to keep people from jumping off the Shanahan train, but I just dove off head first. What the hell is the management of this team thinking. Our defense is not good and we need improvement on that side of the ball, but yet we let go of another pro bowler for nothing. SMOOTH MOVES!!!!!!! They better have some kind of serious trick up their sleeves for this situation.

    Are you kidding me. The Broncos are going to spend all this money in the offseason at the expense of Al Wilson. This is crazy. Why they going cheap now? Sundquist needs to be fired. He needs to go work for the Giants since he's in the business of giving away star players to them. Where's Bowlen in all this, I thought he wanted to win. He talks about let's win one for D-Will and go on this emotional championship run, and not have our emotional leader. This has got to be the biggest mistake in Broncos history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Heartbreaking. Al Wilson is a stand up guy and played his butt off every snap. I guess we are going back to scoring 30 plus a game with a mediocre defense, it worked before.

    It is sad to see Al leave. He is and always will be a true Bronco. With that being said, this is business. Michael Jordan played for the Wizards and Jerry Rice was a Raider before it was all said and done. Al was starting to get a little banged up, and he is nearing the end of his career. I know he had the opportunity to reconstruct his contract. Tom Brady did it for NE. Al will be missed but the show must go on. Bronco Mania.

    This is a horrible idea. Not only was Al a Pro-bowl caliber linebacker but the heart and soul of our defense. I guarentee that the picks/players we receive in return will not replace the loss of leadership.

    Al gone because of money...I guess just like Bert Berry and Trevor Pryce before the Broncos do not pay for performance. Al I guess this means you will have a career year in NY and go to another pro bowl. You will be missed. Broncos I am mad. do something about this HUGE MISTAKE.     Although there is no name being mentioned on the other side of the trade i believe this is a mistake. A number of people have indicated why this is a bad deal. I would say this is a step backwards unless M.S. or T.S. have something up their sleeves. Bringing in Bly was a good move but will it be negated by this trade? Is there a comparable draft pick for Al Wilson? I doubt it. Stay tuned!

    This is one of the worse mistakes the Broncos could make.Wilson is a great leader and a big part of the broncos Defense.Getting rid of him would mean a drop in the rush defense and the loss of a great middle linebacker.

    This makes about as much sense as releasing Trevor Pryce last season then watching him lead Baltimore with 13 sacks. You can't tell me the Broncos would not have had a better pass rush with Trevor. Shannahan is a smart guy but he is not beyond making mistakes. Wilson has lots left in the tank and they won't get in return what he is worth to them in leadership alone. If the Broncos are so intent on improving the team pesonnel as they seem to be, judging by all their recent moves in free agency, then they should make an effort to keep Al Wilson and make their push for the Superbowl. Now is the time.

    Do you think Mike Shanahan is trading Al Wilson only to make some cap space? Wait to see the trade before saying you're not a Broncos fan anymore.
    Maybe the trade is for a higher draft pick (3-way trade with the Lions). Maybe Gibril Wilson is in the trade with a young DE. DJ Williams is ready to see more action and maybe he will do a better job.
    Al Wilson is not Brian Urlacher or Ray Lewis...

    This is one more in a series of trades that confirms Mike Shanahan's total disregard (or lack of awareness) of the intangibles players bring to a team. Shannon Sharpe, Trevor Price, to name a couple, and now Al Wilson. I predict the Broncos will fall short of their goal again this season.

    This hurts badly. The Broncos have paid dearly for all their pickups. They should have considered losing the centerpiece of the Broncos, and furthermore one of the two foundation members of the Broncos as we know them, along with Rod. I think we could have done without Stokely's bad knee and the new Browns lineman, if it meant getting rid of Al. Plus he's playing for the despicable Giants. Truly disgusting day in Broncos country.

    yep this really hurts. the worst part about it is we probably aren't going to get anything in return. We should at the very least get one of their defensive lineman. Umenyiora, Strahan for our pro-bowl middle linebacker doesn't sound like too much to ask. We'll probably end up with draft picks though. Damn, this hurts to lose Wilson.

    I'm a Giant fan and if those goes through I would love it!! Rumors out of NY are Justin Tuck and a 4th rounder headin back. Tuck is a promosing young DE but he has no place on the giants as we are already all set at end. I would love Al Wilson to sure up the defense. Hope it happens!

    There is no reason to pick up any free agents if it means the loss of the heart and soul of the team. Bad move.

    15. If you think trading a five time pro bowler for a third or fourth round pick is a great trade, than you are wrong. Wilson is 30 and isn't the most durable LB, but he is loved by most Bronco fans for his tenacity, and leadership. I think that the Bronco's front office needs a solid GM in there instead of Sunquist, or Shanahan. Mike is a great coach, but I don't like what they do in the draft. If the front office would have drafted a little better after they won the two super bowls than they wouldn't be overpaying for these free agents. Since Superbowl 33 the Broncos have wasted first round picks on the likes of Lelie, Middlebrooks, O'neal, Foster, and Marcus(not sure on first name,WR Tenn.) Nash. Those are five number one draft picks who are no longer with the team, and barely even contributed when they were here. Al was a first rounder who actually lived up to being drafted in the first round. I know that the NFL is big business, but the Broncos seem to do players who contribute to this team a little dirty on the back ends of their careers, see Atwater, Pryce, and now Wilson. Hopefully they make it work, but I don't think the front office should applauded for this move, which I believe is a bad one.

    Very Good Move for The Broncs! In today's NFL/Salary Cap is essential to keep an influx of young impact players. One of the correct knocks on Kerney was that he was 31. Al is 30 and that's getting old in the NFL. The Broncs rid themselves of salary and get to move up in the draft or acquire more young talent. DJ Williams has NEVER been used right and now he gets his chance to shine. I think this is a great move.

    If Wilson is the heart and soul of our defense, then that tells me why we've been so heartless for the last 4-5 years. If we dump 5.2 MM and get a pick at all, its a victory! Wake up homers!

    It is sad to see, but I can not judge the Broncos' jettison-ing of this kind of talent until I see their replacement plan. It works for the Patriots....I have more confidence in Shanahan than anyone except Belichick and Pioli.

    I hate free agency...Al Wilson is a great player. I will miss him. Due to costs, Shanny didn't have a choice. But I wonder what we are getting for him. It better be a first round pick. I am a huge Shanny fan. But this upsets me. The defense fell apart at the end of the season. I wonder if Shanny held that against Wilson.

    Blah, Al showed that he cared about the Broncos and the city of Denver. Bly? Why take a guy who doesnt want to play here? Get a 3 team trade going with the Redskins to get an additional first round pick. Trade Bly to redskins for the round 1 #6 pick have the 3rd team, ex. the 49s, help pay for it, Broncos get the 11th pick, 49s get the 6th. Broncos can get Carriker at the 11th, Griffen or Ross at the 21th, rid themselves of pro bowler Bly, retain Wislon(maybe have to throw in Steve Alexander and low round picks also to make it work). In my opinion, the ideal second round pick would be Steve Smith out of USC. 3rd round Broncos need a DT so that Wilson can be covered well-like Lewis and Urlacher-so Al can be free to roam and ROCK our opponents. (and/or Al how about a little love for the Broncs and rework your contract?)

    What the heck are the Broncos doing? They overpay Daniel Graham and lose great Defensive leadership as a result. Give me a break. The only way I would have traded him would be to send him to Detroit for the number 2 pick in the draft.....

    Well, well... Here I was thinking my Broncos were having a pretty decent off-season, then they go do somthing like this. Granted, Big Al has faced some injury issues of late, and granted, this is a business; but come on! Don't get me wrong, DJ Williams will no doubt step-it-up, and Nate Webster will hit the field and do a fine job, but do you think for a moment either of those guys is going to have the field generalship that Big Al provided? I'm sure the players don't read these things themselves... But will someone who knows the man personally let Al know that many of us are sick about this, and We thank him for the years he spent here. You will be missed.

    I would hate to see Al traded. He's the defensive team leader and the guy who takes all the young players under his wing and guides them to be better players and people. Al is the one who always organized the off-field team activities and is looked up to by every team member and every Denver Bronco fan.I sure hope it doesn't happen. If it does, thanks Al for all the great years you gave the Broncos.

    Seems pretty risky to get what seems like nothing in return. If you're not going to fill a hole with this, and it doesn't seem like they're getting value in return, why create another one?

    If it's not a Champ/Portis type of deal, then why do it?

    On the other hand, Al's best years just may be behind him. He sure was in the wrong place at the wrong time last year many times, more than we're used to seeing.

    Here we have the ugly business side of the game.

    Hard to replace his leadership to this D, one that's already suffered the loss of a very popular player in D-Will.

    This is AWFUL. Wilson is the heart of the defense and forcing him out to make room for Graham is just bad management. If they want cap room get rid of Lynch and Fergeson and give us some safetys that can play and don't take away one of our cornerstones!!!!!!

    It's hard to think of what this defense would look like without Al in the middle. Honestly, I don't know how you replace a defensive leader who is for sure a Top 5 player at his position, if not Top 3. You could argue that Lynch or Bailey are just as valuable as "coaches" on the field, but Al Wilson has been and still is the emotional leader of this defense. Let's hope they can find a way to keep him.

    The only way an Al Wilson trade makes sense is if it's for a high first round pick, and that wouldn't make salary cap sense because of the big $$$ untested high first round picks get.

    Al deserves his $6 million, and 80 percent of us Broncos fans don't mind paying him (and we are the ones who pay each and every dollar of player salaries).

    Keep Al until he has to be wheelchaired off the field.

    In a time, in which the character of NFL players have come in question Al wilson has been a model citizen and a constant professional in the way he carries himself on and off the field. Wilson isn't out there spitting in peoples faces, missing games for drug/legal problems or disrupting team meetings. When the team was scrambling to find its self Al wilson was the one to step up and got the defense together for a weekly dinner, on him. He has been a Bronco since 1999 and has played injured (broken thumbs) more than once and was the leading tackler last year and the third leading tackler in '05. He is what the Broncos orginization should be trying to get, not trade away. The Broncos aren't going to get fair trade value for a player of his caliber because I dont think Payton or Tomlinson are on the table. Money is a problem but I am sure that if the broncos can pay 2 million to a punter who is more of questions mark then the weather, then they can find a way to fit him in the cap whether it is restructuring his or someone elses. Al Willson is a Bronco and should remain one.

Five time pro bowler for a fourth or fifth rounder that won't make a impact next year, real smart. That's like trading a Hummer for a Prius. Pay him the 5.2 million let him lead the team in tackles. Everyone is saying D.J. Williams needs more playing time, so bring Gold off the bench he not as good as Al or D.J. We wouldn't even be talking about D.J.'s playing time if the Broncos, who moved up from 24th to 17th in that draft to get Williams would have addressed our true need that year, and selected Steven Jackson like every analyst thought they would. Instead they took D.J. and let Jackson go to the Rams where he is turning into a top five back. They got Tatum in the second instead, great move. So they get rid of Tatum overpay for Henry and now they don't have enough money for Al. Yea I know it's a what if, but it shows that the Broncos don't draft the best. I still love them though, and yes I am a "homer" when it comes to the Broncos.

    All of you who are so strongly opposed to this should at least wait and see what we get. What if this results in us moving up to pick up Adams or even Johnson? I'm a big fan of Al Wilson and he will definitely be missed but at some point you need to move on and look a few years down the road. And who here doesn't believe he was offered a chance to restructure? If he chooses to take more money elsewhere over restructuring and staying in Denver, then good for him and I wish him well wherever he ends up (especially if it's in Detroit in exchange for the #2......)

    First the woeful Redskins don't want Al Wilson, now the mediocre Giants. Not even for a middle round pick.
    Why would these teams pass on The Greatest Linebacker in History?
    The good news? We get to spend five-plus mil on a guy who can't tackle consistently, can't cover backs or tight ends, picks off a ball once every 25 games and can't stay healthy anymore.
    But he's our heart and soul, so it's a sweet deal. Let's keep him until he has to be "wheelchaired" off the field. Because that's how championships are won!

    He's staying for now but there's other teams looking at him so it's not over yet! When my friend called me this morning and told me the sad news - I was in shock. I never thought the Broncos would consider letting the heart and soul of their team go to another team! What an idiotic idea!! Shanny and Sundquist better find some fat to cut somewhere else on this team or I may end up becoming a Chiefs fan since I now live in Missouri!!!! Not really, I love my Broncos and will always stay loyal, but Mike, you're breaking my heart!!

    SAY NO TO TRADING AL WILSON, another All-Pro who will enjoy another All-Pro year in N.Y. Remember Trevor Pryce w/13 sacks in 06 w/Ravens we can’t afford to lose another key player in the Defense, and replace him with backups. We already have nine (9) new players on the roster and no Cap to draft a high tier player. Because of his cap liability the best we can hope for is a 3rd or 4th round pick - BAD DEAL, stand pat with Wilson. We don’t need more draft picks we can’t afford anyway. Unless we exchange for a high #1 draft pick I say keep our team leader on Defense who’s only 29. 5-Pro Bowls in a 8-year career. This move will hurt the Broncos. Think about it – name one player on defense other than Champ Bailey or Lynch who’s all-pro???? Need I say more? Very bad move…. Rework his contract trade our picks for future picks in 08 and use our 21st pick this year.

    What are we now, the Redskins of the West. Has Shanahan been reading Daniel Snyder's book on how to throw money at the wrong people and lose every year?

    Al Wilson should be the last guy to be moved. Now more than ever, the locker room needs a rock, and Wilson is a rock. The last few years the Broncos have had one of the better locker rooms in the league, and have won a lot of games because of it.

    From what I could tell, the main leaders in the locker room have been Rod Smith, Jake Plummer and Rod Wilson. Plummer is long gone, Rod is probably heading into his last year, and will be gone next year, and now Wilson is on the block?

    We missed Mike Anderson badly last year, when we couldn't keep leads. We missed Trevor Pryce badly. These guys were respected in the locker room, and then shown the door. Ditto for Plummer, and potentially Wilson.

    Bellichick has proven he's shrewd enough to pull off similar moves and make it work. Shanahan has not, in fact things have backfired on him. I'm tired of it, and if Al Wilson is not holding this delicate team together next year, things could get ugly.

    Broncos waited too long to pull the trigger for Lions #2 pick. Latest news has Buc trade with Lions swapping position. Only possible trade available for Broncos to move up to select any of the top tier DE's are gone. All the DE's including Carriker have move up into the top 12 and any late first round and second round picks (Spencer, Moss) would be a 1 to 3 years away from cracking the line up simular to Elvis Dummerviel. Maybe Nelson at safety would still be available at 21 or a top flight WR. Draft best available player. Only possible trade left now is with Redskins will Shanny pull the trigger??? Now I say we keep Wilson, the deal in NY is dead….

    Speaking from the heart I think Shanny should go for this. But thinking with my head, this may be a good move. Al might bring alot in trade as far as a draft pick or a good palyer. I saw D.J. play in college and he is Damn good. But with Al there he is on the side line. I Don't think the Defense will suffer at all, if anything it might get better, DJ is younger and faster. The team is setting up for the future in offense why not on Defense??????

    I'm up here in Ottawa Canada, and i'm so upset right now, that i've decided that wherever al goes, I go too!! Not since John Elway left have bronco fans had somebody to embrace! Shanahan is called a mastermind, but this move or even shopping Al shows that he's not using his mind or heart at all.

    He's gotten caught up with signing the 'best' free agents available....overspending on TE's, RB's, and ushering in the new 'broncos' while he's kicking out the old ones!

    This is a typical Mike Shanahan move, and this time, this is one bronco fan that's not going to take it!

    So thank you Mike for pushing me away from the broncos. I've been a fan of the broncos for over 25 years now, but this is it....if and when Al goes, so do I!!!

    Best of luck to Al wherever he ends up, he'll always be a leader, and remembered as one of the best linebackers in the game!

    I'm trying to figure out who said Al Wilson was the "best linebacker in history"? I haven't personally ever heard anyone say that, anyone else? Just wondering? The compensation? Obviously a salary cap move- word is out we don't want to pay him- so why give up picks or players when in all liklihood he will be cut. I think Trevor Pryce was a pretty good player and we let him go for nothing.

This team is going to have to struggle enough with the loss of D-Will, we need THE MAN to hold this defense together.     It is a shame that players that have become fan-favorites are unable to end their careers in Denver because of free-agency and the salary cap. Over time these players become part of the Denver and Bronco community, and it unfortunate to see actions by the Broncos management not taking that into consideration.

    It is time to lose Wilson, he is overrated, too small and he misses too many tackles, good leader, so is Keith Burns, but Burns is cheaper and more effective. Williams is a natural for the MLB position bigger and faster than Wilson and he makes impact play. Wilson just cleans up trash. In a year no one in Denver will remember who Al Wilson is, and if we can get a good DE, then I am sold, we have some good depth a LB, this is a move we should of made last year. Everyone says he is a good run defender, when I watched SD, SF and KC run all over us last year with Wilson in.

    Didn't the broncos do something this stupid after Elway left. Getting rid of Team leaders, with a young quarterback in the starting position only to bring some of them back (ie. Burns, Sharpe). This is a stupid move on many levels. Why get rid of a key player like Wilson? This fan isn't behind getting rid of a great LB.

    hey #97, you are an idiot. I wish you weren't a Broncos fan. Al Wilson is not only a pro bowler, he is an all-pro. In case you don't know the differance, the all-pros are the guys who the nfl coaches and players vote as the best players in the conference. Only one player from each position gets this honor per year. It was Al Wilson, not Ray Lewis, (a future hall of famer) who was the AFC all pro at middle linebacker. Wilson has missed 3 games in his career. He is worth the risk of injury and the money this year and the next 4 or 5. If the Broncos trade him, they will regret it.

    I do hate the move. But DJ is still the best LB on the field for the Broncos, weither or not Wilson is a Bronco or not. DJ is bigger, stronger and much faster and younger that Al. That said, try to keep Wilson, if a trade does happen swap 1st round picks and get some 2 or 3 rounders. I believe DJ is more, more that capable of playing and leading the MLB position. This years draft is also filled with good talented LB's, and D-Line.

    I hate to say this but I think we all know shanny. He has to be working something up, hopefully really good. I am willing to bet that after all is said and done, and after the draft is over, us fans might, just might tip our hats off to Shanny. But Knock on Wood! Its sounds like Wilson is not going to move very soon though?

    What a crock! Al Wilson is the face of the Broncos Defense! Its pretty apalling that he would even be talk of a trade. We've voiced our complaints to the Broncos executive office, and everyone should do the same! Lets protest this and get this trade stopped or at least be heard. Pat needs to know that we are emotionally involved in this, and Al has a whole Broncos country that refuses to let him go!!

    wow, I really don't want the Broncos to move Al for less than a lot. But I'll tell you one thing Broncos fans. If the Broncos can move up to the #2 overall spot for only their 1st, 2nd, and Al, they have to do that deal. Calvin Johnson is a better prospect in my mind than Reggie Bush. The guy would be amazing on any team, but just think about this for a second: a couple of years ago we had mediocre Jake Plummer throwing to a possession wr past his prime and a deep threat with no hands (smith and lelie) not exactly explosive or threatening pass offense huh? Now think about one of the strongest and most acurate qbs in the game, lacking only experience, #6 Jay Cutler throwing to a versatile dangerous wr in Walker. A guy who can get any first down anywhere on the field and is always a threat down the field, and pair him up with young Calvin Johnson. Johnson is an athlete unlike anyone in the NFL. He is tall so he can grab any pass, yet he is unbelievably fast, think steve smith except in a 6'6'' frame. I honestly don't know how anyone could stop that. Not even Champ and Bly. Who by the way would be perfect in practice to push these guys. If they can line up against champ and bly they can line up against anybody. It's like practicing with weights attached and then going into games and taking them off. Making it that much easier. I really don't care what the price is in draft picks and Al, if we can land Johnson it is worth it.

    Can someone please tell me why Pat Bowlen continues to let Mike Shanahan make unbelievably stupid trades and acquisitions. Gone Portis, Sign Clarrett, Sign Plummer, inheret Cleveland Chumps, now get rid of the most impactful person on a decent defense, not to mention a very popular and good person. What has Shanahan done since John Elway? Nothing. Dan Reeves took Denver to three Super Bowls! Shanahan has a misrepresented reputation thanks to three HOF quarterbacks, Montana, Young, Elway. What has the offensive mastermind done with average talent? Anyone could get to a Super Bowl with any of those three. Kubiak is the reason Denver's offense was worth half its weight in gold. Kubiak gone, Jake inefficient, and Denver out of the playoffs. So not only is Shanahan overrated as a coach, he is terribly worse as a GM. Let's get rid of Shanny and bring in someone who can coach, bring in a GM and bring AL (the heart and soul of Defense) Wilson for another five years. Mr. Bowlen, and you other Shanny Groupies, Elway is gone, the Super Bowl years are over; can we capitalize on what young talent we do have and move toward a new ERA. Thanks.

    Anyone who says we can't afford to keep Wilson is an idiot. Al has been the leader of this defense since he has been here. We would be lucky if the Broncos ended up realizing their mistake before it is too late. Sure, he's been injured; name me a pro who doesn't get injured at some point or another. At least give him a year of probation to see how he holds up. Trading one of the best linebackers in the league is just stupid.

    #121 Shanahan had the deal two weeks ago to trade Wilson, an additional draft pick and swap #1's and he turned it down. It's too late now the Tampa Bay Bucs pulled the trigger and made the trade with Lions. Our only hope now is with Washington. Wilson's failed physical may be a blessing in disguise though. He will have to take a pay cut otherwise Broncos will have to cut him. Sad either way you look at it.

    You're right, HOGblog. The Broncos were trying to get some value back for Wilson, but since there are several reports that he has failed the Giants' physical, a trade is no longer likely.

    We'll just have to see how this plays out, especially since the Broncos really need to free up $5.2 million in salary that now counts against the cap.

    hey there 666, theres different interp's of "homers". I actually like yours. I meant it in the "cut Atwater?, let Sharpe go?" kind of way.
    ex: javon Walker had 1000 yards and 7TD's last year and we gave him 50MM! That was about the 7th best year for Rod Smith, statistically. But B-fans all talk like Walker is a top 5 WR and we are "set" at the position. I am a homer, but in a Team first, not the player in the jersey type of way. Its good to be loyal to guys that have made plays, but its good to be able to let go and embrace the new guys too.
    I see an effort to get younger, bigger and faster at all the postions on the field, and Wilson doesnt fit into that mold anymore.
    HEY? does failing the physical make it more likely that Al will re-structure to stay here?? He could be the best 2.5 MM a year MLB in the league if he wants to, or the worst 6MM a year one. Lets see where Als loyalties are before you all jump over managements "disloyalty".

    "Superbowl contender"-shudder!
    two years ago, we had the easiest schedule I had seen in awhile. Last year we had one of the toughest ever. SD,SD,KC,KC,SEA,CIN,PITT,Balt, NE,Indy. oddly enough it was losses in week1 and 17 vs STL and SF that cost us p-offs. 3 losses vs SD,SD,Indy, we gave up 120 pts and lost half-time home leads in 2 of those games.
    superbowl teams dont do those things. In fact, in the playoffs we have been humiliated in our last 3 of 4 when the real superbowl contender gets a hold of us, oddly again, not including NE, who as a credit to Shanny, WE OWN! We have more talent right now then we've had in awhile. But new starter Cutler and Marshall are all potential, Walker is not as good as Rod Smith was (not yet stat-wise) Sheffler, Graham, DJ, Gold, Bly are all Q-marks and Warren MUST stay healthy (no toes).
    We need help at DE, DT, OL and a FS with a nose for the football would help. MLB-? Al's one major flaw-he tries to hit to free the ball, but doesnt. If you cant get the ball out, then wrap up -Right??
    ST's were affected greatly by our defensive scheme last year. Our D considtently let teams drive to mid-field then tightend letting the other team pin us deep with a punt. Bates may not be the answer but he will fix several flaws from last year.
    Dont get me wrong, I am a huge believer in Cutler, Henry, Walker, Marshall (can he catch?) Sheffler and even Mike Bell- he puts the rock in the zone-sweet! But....?????'s...
    Superbowl??......wow....hope we have a GREAT draft.

    telli how can you say his neck is fine, when his neck was one of the major reasons why he failed his physical! Read all the articles on this, and all of them mention his neck injury that happened late in the season.

    Also, Al disappointed me a lot when he did not play in the Sam Fran game, which had very big playoff potential. But rather he sat out the whole game. Did anyone notice how good DJ played in the game... Oh yeah for once he was on the field, he was making tackles left and right!!

    The Broncos should hold onto Al Wilson and pay him huge sums of money despite his age, injuries, and declining performance for sentimental reasons? It is too bad that the trade didn't come through...Al failed his physical and that should be something to worry about if he ends up staying and the Broncos end up paying. Just look at the number of RBs that ran over Al last season...I think that a change is due.

    Al wilson is the head of the best linebacking trio in the nfl. however with the injuries he sustained last year combined with the fact that he is getting older and the fact that he is too expensive it is time to let him go provided he wont take a paycut. now we juss need to try and get the best possible pick up we can. and i dont mean a 4th round pick who will play on the practice squad or be cut. loosing wilson i dont think will hit us as hard as people may think. dj williams moving inside will not give up anything as a middle linebacker and if we get a defensive that could put pressure on the quarterback consistenly then that will help alot. im not happy about loosing wilson he is my favorite player on the team but sometimes business has to be taken care of

    #137- Allo - look at the year the quarterbacks had when Smith had his huge statistical years. Just a little better than Jake (who was looking over his shoulder the whole year, waiting to lose his job) and Cutler making his first 5 starts. Lets see how Walker does next year before we declare him an overpaid, overrated receiver, who only Bronco fans could think is a great player.

    Looking more and more like they should dump Al. Injuries are catching up to him and at his age, he is slowing down. The biggest issue I have is his lasck of ability or want to wrap up on tackles, just going for the big hit and then the RB (LT) bounces off and is headed for big positive yards. Take a pay cut or take your injured body somewhere else.

    Al Wilson has been the heart of this defense since he became a starter. Barring Major injuries, Al will play through almost anything. I think he has the stuff to be the Broncos MLB for another 3-5 years which is a rarity in the NFL in 2007. Don't pretend that we know the entire story re: his injury and what we would get in return, but on the surface this looks like a bad move. Al Wilson has been a great Denver Bronco, whatever happens before the draft.

    Look guys, applaud Al for his inspiration and leadership but in the NFL it is all about current performance and predictability of future performance. Why do you think the defense went from being talked about as one of the best of all time to chop liver from the beggining of the year to the end. Well because of schedule and because the deteroiation of our defensive line and the deterioration of Al Wilson. Al's leadership can only help when he is performing at a Pro Bowl level and if he isn't as Shanny determined...then why pay him as such. Let's just picture Rod Smith the year before last. Wouldn't you have liked to trade him for something...now we can't get anything for him and he had to take a pay cut to stay with us. Let's get something for Al now before he deteriorates into someone who is a 5.2 million dollar liablilty. Bates wants his defense strong up front and DJ can be better for us in the MLB. If this helps us get a stout DT or pass rushing DE by allowing us to trade up WE MUST DO THIS NOW. Do you really think we are going to get an impact player at 21??

    This would be a terrible mistake unless the Broncos were able to get at least a second round pick for him. He is a star, but all the hits he has dished out over the years are taking their toll. A young and talented prospect might be worth the chance.

    If the Broncos are trying to trade him because of money, I have an issue with that. They never should of signed Graham. Did anyone else whatch the TE Sheffler. He looked awesome as a rookie. Do you think that another TE for that price was worth it? He's not worth the money. Ben Watson maybe.

    "At the end of the day, its a business" - I don't buy it. At the end of the day its about passion. That's why 'old school' Bronco fans are the way they are. That's why Superbowl XXXII felt the way it did. They were our guys playing for us. Heart, leadership, and character are in short supply in professional sports and Al Wilson has them in spades. I would rather lose with Al, then win without him. I'm not naive, I know teams have to rebuild, retool, but - KEEP the CORE or we won't have any passion for the team either.

    "I would rather lose with Al, then win without him." It is these kind of fans that are sad. You would rather your home team lose with a old worn out player, than win with a new supporting cast? That is dumb. Don't get to sentimental with players, especially if you want your team to be on the balance of winning or losing with/without a player. I love Al, and love the way he plays, but get real, DJ can fill the middle better than any LB on Denver, including Wilson. Yeah he is a leader and all of that, but pay a player for how he plays, not on how he leads. Don't pay a guy millions of dollars just because he leads. Wilson is still capable of being a contributer, but Denver gave him his chance. It takes a REAL LEADER TO RESTRUCTURE HIS CONTRACT, JUST LIKE ROD AND CHAMP! Wilson was given the option to restructure his contract, but has not or did not. If you do trade him, get something valuable in return, like a 2 round pick.

    64- I never said trading al for a 3rd or 4th rounder was a good idea. Every trade scenario has been pure speculation. All I said was that the Broncos would manage a good trade which they have a history of doing. No team in the league has had as much success with trades as the broncos and I was trying to be optimistic that we would get something good out of it.

    TP and HOGblog ... You're California transplants aren't you. You both missed the whole point. It's about keeping heart and leadership which eventually wins championships because of how those individuals elevate others. I'm sure you would have traded Elway somewhere around his 9th or 10th season as well. But as far as the salary side, hey I love Rod and I don't want him in any uniform but a Broncos, but we all know that he's in his last productive year. Al has lots of interest because he's in the middle to late part of his prime. HOGblog, agreed, Champ is the best defenseman but he's not one of the leaders, that's obvious. And for both TP and HOGblog, because you weren't paying attention, Al IS a current All Pro.

    Look at the players that Denver has released/traded the past few years; Monte Reagor, Bert Berry,the TE from Boise State, the CB for the Bengals. What did we get in return? a defensive line from the Browns and now we sign another browns lineman.

    Hogblog you're an idiot, yes its a business but you can not replace one of the leagues top 5 middle linebackers on a whim. If Denver loses Wilson I guarantee Denver will not only miss the playoffs again next year but will not even have a winning record. He is that important to the spirit and production of this defense. And if any of you Bronco fans feel different about that just look at our run defense last year after letting Trevor Price go, you think the drop off was bad there, watch and see what happens if you lose Wilson.

    Inquire within any Broncos player as a source for your spiritual leadership evidence. He has the respect and admiration of every man in that locker room to the 9's. That's called chemistry building. Shanny doesn't even have to police his team since Al and a few others are exemplary in their approach to the game and mentality beyond the business aspects of football.

    I don't see how getting the pro bowl even by popularity can be a weakness. You're right, Al Wilson misses some tackles, he's not the same player he was a few years ago. But on the other hand, name 5 guys who you would rather have playing mlb fo the Broncos that aren't older than he is (ie ray lewis or Zach Thomas). I can honestly only think of two maybe three. Urlacher and the younger lb from seatle, Lofa Tatupu or whatever his name is. I am just saying, there are flaws with almost every player in the league. Obviously there are better MLBs out there than Al, but there are a heck of a lot more teams out there who have bad MLBs in the middle who would want someone of Al's talent. I think it's worth the risk of his injuries and the salary cap. It just seems like there are guys who deserve to be traded or even cut much more than 56.

    Gt you are the exact reason why we traded them. If you are going to make a argument for/against something at least know the names of the people you were talking about. One, Bert Berry was not traded or released, he was a free agent who signed else where. Two, you must be talking about Jeb Putzier when you are referring to the guy out of Boise State, he was also not traded. Three, you are talking about Delta O'Neil who was released because of his horrific play, now he is in Cincy getting arrested and not producing at all, oh yeah, we also acquired Champ that year once Delta was let go, I will take that any day.

    David you are the idiot. I have been a loyal Broncos fan since I was a child (been living in Denver, Colorado since I was born). Two, I would have never said trade Elway, I am also big Stanford sport fan and knew what Elway brought to the table, even when he was playing poorly.

    This is not matter or were you are from or what ever mindless idiotic excusse one may have, this is about the possibility of the Broncos and Wilson moving on in seperate directions. Yes, the Broncos should be loyal to the players, but in return shouldn't the players be loyal to the TEAM? Wilson has been/was given the oppurtunity to restructure his contract with the Broncos, which would releive some pressure off the cap. But, instead of being a team captain and loyal player like Champ and Rod are, Al is selfish and wants the big money.

    Don't get me wrong I want Al to stay put in Denver. But what some of you fans don't see is that their should be loyalty from both sides. It has been documented since the end of the season that the Broncos have tried to restructure Wilson contract, but Wilson has had no part of it, time to move on and get a team player. The Broncos have plenty of leadership in Lynch and Bailey on that Defense. With what ever happens with Wilson I do hope him the best! DJ has the ability and talent to produce very well in the middle.

    Give some heart Al, play in the final game of the season, stick with the team. Cutler, a rookie, played with a concussion and still played.

    First of all, Al should be OFFERING to take a pay cut for the sake of the team. However, I think trading him go would be a HUGE mistake. They should be trading Bly , a guy who doesn't even want to be a Bronco anyway. How much did Bly really help Detroit? They were lousy with him, and they'll be lousy without him. Al Wilson IS the heart and soul of this club, and losing him will hurt real bad. DJ might do a decent job, but if they are going to move him it should be back to weak side in favor of Ian.

Broncos will do fine without Wilson. The Defense and leadership will be hit a little, but the overall with remain the same. I have the faith in DJ and the other LB we have or may draft. H.B. Blades is a awesome, big talent who come really lay the wood to people. Or take a look at some other talented guys coming out of the Draft.

    The Broncos are also going to be fine with Cuter and everybody else at the helm, they would be a lot better if David were to become a Raider/Charger/Chief fan, then he could give all of those teams his advise, The Broncos would win the West every year!

    Can someone tell me why I should be down on Javon Walker? I think he had a nice year considering Jake's meltdown and Cutler's inexperience. He also had no other experienced receiver with any athleticism across from him (sorry Rod). Pretty tough facing constant double teams and getting the ball from Jake the Flake, and Cutler making his first starts.

    KEEP the CORE, even after the core is dried-up. There's a reason the same guys who won those two Super Bowls aren't, for the most part, playing anymore.
    I don't know what you consider "old school," but I'd lay odds you don't go back with this team nearly as far as I do. It's got nothing to do with "old school," but it has plenty to do with the reality of football.

    He spoke at both of the funerals this off season does that count? I think the term "spitirual leader" is being used in reference to his being the spirit of the team. Not his religion or spirituality. At any rate this is what he said at Darrent William's funeral "I was taught as a child that you cry when a child is brought into this world because they're brought into a world of trials and tribulations," Wilson said. "And you rejoice and celebrate when you leave." Sounds pretty spiritual to me.

    I Think the only way we trade Al wilson is to Detroit with our #21 and 2nd rounder. for their #2 overall. That is fair value. I am not sure who we go after maybe joe thomas, Gaines Adams, Calvin Johnson or trade down for more picks and still get the guy we want but the trade with NY was whack, moving up one spot. Denver has been known to blow first round picks Lelie, Foster, Oneal and even Paul Tovessie although he was a 2nd rounder he never played one game. We have let talent go Berry and Hayward, thay could've really helped us last year. I love AL Wilson but it may be the right time to part with him and I do think he is the spiritual leader because, He is the Heart and soul of the Defence and the team as a whole, he's not just A captain he's the fire and brings it every sunday I can't believe we are talking about letting him go but if he is injured we probably should, Lynch had a neck injury and he's still knocking people on their butts so either way its business and it sometimes hurts especially business in the NFL.

    Bottom line is the Broncos don't think Wilson is worth the investment anymore. Wilson, Coyer, and Patterson were considered by the Broncos to be the reason for the defensive meltdown last year. Wilson was called into Shanny's office and told so. Wilson was also BENCHED for the 49ers game not injured. When healthy, Wilson is the 2nd best defender on the team but evidently the Broncos don't feel he is healthy or worth the money. Giants did not like the results from Al's physical. The defense does not get better by subtracting Al Wilson and even if the secondary has improved, teams will try to run on the Broncos more. Wilson is likely gone and the Broncos don't have issues with that. Hopefully we get something in return rather than just cutting him.

    The Broncos have really screwed this situation up. First of all, I don't think they could have packaged Wilson, our #21 and a 2nd rounder for the #2 overall pick. If that offer was ever out there, the Broncos should have jumped on it. Secondly, with Wilson failing his physical, there is no way Denver will get more than a 4th or 5th rounder for him - from the Giants or any other team. His stock has fallen that much in the last few days... So now they either trade him for practically nothing, or try to restructure his deal. The last, and possibly most realistic, option at this point is they release him.

    I've always been an Al Wilson fan, and I love the way he performs on the field. However, the NFL is a business, and it doesn't make sense to pay a guy 5+ million who is on the downside of his career.

    Yep, and here we have the sharp end of the business side of the NFL. Bottom line of it is that we can't afford to pay a guy like a top performer if he isn't. Obviously, Denver doesn't feel like the guy is worth the $$$ they are paying him. Our feelings about the player are simply irrelevant. Al Wilson himself understands this.

    The NFL is a business above EVERYTHING else. Fans sometimes don't get that, as evidenced by at least half the posts here.

    Folks, sadly Al is on the downside of his career. We simply aren't going to get much for him if we trade him, regardless of what he may have meant to the team in the past; those emotional ties are simply irrelevant. He may end up staying, but certainly not at his current salary.

    The rest of the NFL now knows what the Broncos were sitting on. The word is out on the neck, and the word ain't good. This takes his value to other teams down to next to nothing.

    This is reality in the Not For Long. Whether we love Al or not simply doesn't matter. There's BIG BUCKS involved here, and there isn't any space for sentimentality in today's NFL.

    It is a BUSINESS, first and foremost. If you don't like that, well, sign up for intramural sports or something like that, like Hawkins says.

    Yeah it might seem like we fumbled the Wilson situation but let me throw a hypothetical situation for Wilson coming back with the Broncs. If he really has had this poor of a medical diagnosis than we should be able to sign him for less money, which is obviously a positive for the Broncos. Also, I wouldn't write off Wilson either. The only middle linebackers that I would take over Wilson are Urlacher and maybe Lewis. We get our captain back at a discounted price and he's heard all the speculation about him so he could be pretty pissed off, another positive for the Broncos defense. We are really close to suring up our defense if we can draft a stud we can't afford to lose the glue of our squad now. If we do get rid of him, who are we going to get that will do the job that he does?

    I think what everyone is missing here is that trading Al is a stepping stone to what the Broncos would do next: trade way up in the draft. I don't know if that's with Detroit, Washington, or maybe Cleveland. But Shanny wants to send our 1, 2, and 1 or 2 third rounds picks to move up in the draft and get an impact player. The Broncos already have depth at nearly every position, what they need is a guy like Gaines Adams, Landry, or somehow Calvin Johnson to make an impact and become a star. I honestly don't want them to trade Al, but if we do, and we trade up in the draft. None of you will be complaining next year and 10 after that if whoever we get is a star impact player who replaces Al and has youth as well. Shanahan will not trade Al unless he sees an upside or a future in doing so. Also, lay off Daniel Graham, the guy is a great pass catching TE, NE just had a better one in Watson. And every year it seems like Shanahan tries and tries to get a TE who can block, and guys who can't block are cut (putzier, Desmond Clark). Give him a chance to prove he is worth the money.

    It sounds like the Broncos not only need to trade some of their players, they also need to trade some of these baby fans in here. Get a grip, Wilson is probably going to stay for one more year. This Pryce talk is stupid, look who he plays around. Shanny and the Broncos do make some bone-head pick-ups but looks at their trade history. They traded a ignorant RB in Clinton and got a fine CB in Champ. They traded up to get the future of the Broncos, and maybe even the league. The Broncos and their drafts are not soooo hot, but their trades are, so sit and wait, who knows what could happen? Maybe nothing.

    Is Wilson’s injury a blessing? Let's hope so but he's got to be willing to rework his contract other wise he will be cut. We little or no cap…

    Prediction - Draft Day Trades; Detroit & Falcons will swap #1 picks, and Skins will swap with Bears. Any chance Broncos had of moving up in the draft to pick their first Franchise player won't be possible if either of these trades transpire before draft day. I’m disappointed that we didn’t do the trade when we had the chance with Lions. I think Shanahan played hardball and it’s going to cost the team. Said another way Broncos blew any chances of drafting a Franchise player. What was once thought to be a great off season looks shaky without the pass rusher and the possible lost of the defensive team leader Al Wilson.

    Since Denver does not need to move Wilson for cap space now (roughly $7 mil UNDER the cap), it is pretty obvious that Shanahan is preparing for a MAJOR move up the draft board. A trade into the top 10 will require a ton of cash in signing bonuses and we cannot afford to pay Wilson $6 million this year AND a rookie DE around $10 mil to $12 mil. Like most Bronco Fans, if Wilson is moved it will be a sad day for me. But remember that the goal is winning another SB and if moving Wilson and trading up in the draft helps get us there, then that is what we have to do...

    People are making way too much of the emotional/spiritual impact that Al Wilson has on the Broncos. I think it's a stroke of genius to move the guy, unfortunately he had to fail a physical...

    Denver linebacker play has been overrated for a number of years now. And quite frankly, this is where the defense needs to improve, I would say even more than the line. When was the last time that you saw a linebacker make a a game changing play? How about a sack, forced fumble, ball batted down, interception? It's been the play of the linebackers that have kept opposing offenses on the field and why Denver can't stop teams on third down. Think about it. It's third and four and the quarterback throws it short. Where are the linebackers? I think it's a great move to upgrade that position. Put a guy in there that will make a play, and people will forget Wilson in a heartbeat.

    I agree J H, give Graham a chance before you pass judgement. The guy is all heart.
    I still think they should be shopping Dre' Bly instead of Al. In my opinion Bly is rather over-rated, he's a good cover guy, but he's afraid of contact. Besides Foxworth is going to be fine, probably not as good as Darrent would have been, but he's just going to get better and better.
    I would also like to know where that info about Al being benched for the niners game came from. I agree that Coyer and Patterson were responsible, but Al was most definitely not. Gerard Warren needs to play hard the whole game, not just when he feels like it, and I like Kenard Lang, but he is no Trevor Pryce

    Guy's I am worried. I was born in Denver and I am a die hard fan like most of you. I live in Orlando Florida about 5-10 minutes from UCF this is where Brandon Marshall graduated. I was worried when we drafted him because of issues I heard. He was a rebel and not into being one to work within a structured format. his getting arrested just makes what I have heard hear true. I know he is a stud but I think you trade him now and don't wait. Again I work next to UCF and I hear the inside scoop on some of these guys from UCF. This has to be a red flag.

    ok, let me clear some stuff up. 1, Al Wilson was benched against the 49ers because of his injury. Neither Al nor the coaches wanted to do it but it was for safety reasons post neck injury. 2, the scheme of Denver's defense was not one that put its linebackers in a position to make those kind of game-changing plays. As far as the third down plays, they need to put pressure on the quarterback in order to force a decision. The same goes for why Denvers lbs didn't have many ints or forced fumbles. 3, trevor pryce was set to make 10 mil for the Broncos that year, dwight freeney doesn't make that much a year. We would have been stupid not to get rid of him. It wasn't that we didn't know he was a good player, we just couldn't afford him. 4, the fact that NY failed Al Wilson in his physical may just mean that like us they were not willing to pay him what his contract was worth. Which means the Giants did us a favor, they got Al Wilson apraised right in front of him. This means he will be more likely to negotiate his contract down.

    The ship in Bronco Nation is sinking!! All of the free agents Denver acquired (with exception of Henry) are not needed. The main goal was to get a defensive lineman in free agency - and it didn't happen (that is if Bigg Daddy doesn't show up on Friday, which is highly unlikely). They did pick up another recycled Cleveland DL, but we all know how that story goes. let's think realistically - Denver doesn't have a chance to move up in the draft unless they are throwing down a lot of money (which they don't have) and some big playmakers. With Al Wilson's injury and failed physical he isn't worth much. And now Marshall has been arrested. The outlook for the 2007 doesn't look good my friends. Will this be the last year of "ShannyBall"??

    What was once looking like a great off-season - before; 1. Wilkinson not reporting 2. Bly still hasn't reported and no communications with Shanahan, 3. Al Wilson's possible trade & injuries, 4. Keith Burns retires, 5. Brandon Marshall arrested, 6. No trade to secure a top 6 impact player from 07 draft. Moving up the draft board looks impossible now unless Skins are still interested in Bly?

    How will Broncos defense perform without Wilson, Bly, and Wilkinson? Can all these new Broncos mash together in time to help last year’s team and win a Super Bowl? I think not, a change of heart since my first post. I think it will take till 08 before all these new players will have cohesiveness – reality struck me in the face this morning. We will make the playoffs but, not sure about the Super Bowl, too many changes for team to overcome.

    It was reported in the Post that when Javon Walker restructured his contract, that gave the Broncos an extra $3 million in cap space to go with $4 million of existing space. Not sure if Klis or Williamson wrote that story.

    Wilson is being moved or restructured not because of salary cap space but actual cash paid out. In fact, moving Wilson via trade would actually be a hit to the cap because he only counts $4.8 mil against the cap this year but if he is moved, due to prorated bonuses, he would count over $6 mil against the cap. But Henry and Graham are going to get $27 mil cash and should Denver trade up to the top 10 of the draft, the bonus will be in the $10 mil to $15 mil range, depending on which pick.

Ist -I was listening to NFL radio on Sirius yesterday and the ever reliable Pat Kirwin eluded to the fact that we are about 5 million under the cap right now. 2nd if you read this paper there is a story about Bly and it says that he has spoken to Shannahan on more then one occasion and there was an interview yesterday from the owners meeting in which Coach said the same thing. 3RD - Al Wilson has been playing with the same neck pain since 2003, and the problem he had last year was totally unrelated. I dont want him traded either but if his neck was such a problem he wouldnt have had 110 tackles last year. 4th - Keith Burns is still on the team as a coach. 5th - Just like the Jay Cutler move these things don't happen until draft day to avoid tipping your hand. Detriot has shown interst in moving out of number two and has an interst in Al Wilson. 6th - who cares about Dan Wilkinson. They guy never comes to camp on time and he didnt even record a sack last year. Give us back the draft pick!! Oh yea, and Brandon Marshall getting arrested. HE BLOCKED A CAB WITH HIS TRUCK!!     # 206 BroncoBud you are right every year we hear about how Denver has one of the best and fastest trio's of linebackers in the NFL and we do, but I have been thinking the reason they don't make big plays, INT,s fumble recoveries, sacks was Coyer's system I may be wrong. I have seen many catchable int's go through gold, wilson and Williams hands. we have the speed for sacks just we didn't rush the LB's much. We have the ultimate playmaker in Bailey we have a nice rush end in Dummerville, We need a shawn Merriman without the Juice of course in the middle, I think DJ has the skill set but I am not sure why were not seeing it.
    As far as Marshall is concerned lets wait until the guy actually breaks a real law before we start calling him a gangster, I mean he had a fight with his girlfriend big deal its a misdemeanor. and forget about what he did in college I mean everyone NFL player does crap in college. If you wanna talk about a gangster Terrell Owens is cancer and he doesn't break any laws per say but he ruins teams. Marshall hasn't pulled a Owens or a Portis we all know how women can get you upset when they want, so lets give him a little more time before we hang him or trade him

    Thanks for knocking some sense into some heads! Shanny knows what he's doing. The team looks stronger than it has in years(even though there are some holes), regardless of who we get in the draft. Bates will have this defense fired up, regardless of who's on the field. The offense will light up the score board. All this adversity that this team is facing (blessings in disguise)...will make this team STRONGER.     I wouldn't move Al, but I'd re-do his deal. It's a ton of cash over the next few years and DJ needs to be our MLB very soon. In fact, I'd take AW out of all nickle and dime packages and let DJ and Ian Gold (both faster players) do their thing.

    1. Bly signs extension...NOW he's a happy Bronco. Cmon Dre', it's time for you to step to the microphone and tell us you love it here!

    2. Al, you are hurt and we feel for you. But you will be taking a paycut and playing another position, or you will be traded for seemingly nothing. Get well, come back, but no as MLB. It's someone elses turn.

    3. Pray to the Gods that Shanny shows he has a pair and loads up with quality DE's, BUT PLEASE NO MORE BROWNS! We need to grow some studs of our own. Let Jim Bates make the picks. His reputation seems to support his capability and knowledge.

    4. Don't run Brandon Marshall off! You dont know that Dominik Hixon is as is good, and we need him as our #2. Kircus is a #3 at best, and Qunicy is really not a good #3 receiver anyway. Stokely could be key if he's healthy, but thats a big IF? So keep Brandon on the straight and narrow. But please dont confine him to the Shanahan Dog House just yet! Brandon!!!!!!!!!! Didn’t realize stating facts could be considered “sky is falling mentality� as for Bly the only thing I’ve read is that his agent was handling all the negotiations with Shanahan that’s usually how its done. I also heard an interview that Shanahan was quoted as say “he hopes Bly will show up� (next Monday) that was yesterday and he still wasn’t sure. Good news though; Dri’ Bly has signed an extension and is officially a Bronco! Pat Kirwin not one of my favorites so I don’t even bother to read his negative columns anymore. Al Wilson is one of my favorites and I’ve never posted anything negative about Al. I was paraphrasing what was written in the news your local paper. I guess Wilson wasn’t interested in redoing his contract during the off season to help the Salary Cap situation. But now that his health issue has come to the forefront he may have to renegotiate his contract or possibly be cut if not traded before June 1st. I personally want Wilson to stay as a Bronco.

    Lets see Keith Burns retires to become assistance coach on Special teams, I think that’s great Burns will still be with the team but there’s a saying; “those that can play and those that can’t teach (go into coach). Burns has always been a great special teams player and I guess his replacement will be Paul Smith.

    Jason as you say “normally trades concerning draft picks are done on D-day� and I’m sure it will be the same this year. However, because of the limited number of franchise players and the huge gap this year who’s truly #1 (Calvin Johnson) and the new approach to the draft could change how trades are done. Signing for need first through Free Agency has several teams fighting for the top 5-players. I wasn’t trying to be APOCALYPTIC (hehehe) but sharing my opinion and Prediction that two trades could be completed before the draft and I still think it will happen and the Broncos will lose the chance to move up. I was convinced the Broncos wanted to draft the best DE (Gaines Adams) and potential franchise player but, doesn’t look like we’re going in that direction. The Broncos had the chance to move up in the draft as high as 2 or 6 and with all the success we’ve had this off season I say why not go for it. Like everyone is saying we average 9+ wins a season and that guarantees the Broncos will are always draft near the bottom in each round (hence that’s the reason Broncos & Patriots are always signing veterans to fill there needs). Now we know the NFL is a copy cat league so several teams have started to do the same thing. You say “who cares about Dan Wilkinson�, I also though the 6th round draft pick was too high for an over weight player past his prime but our new Defensive Coordinator Jim Bates plans to stop the run with girth and weight. Warren 325 lbs and hopefully Wilkinson at 345+lbs will require double teaming and help our DE’s to rush the passer easier. Brandon Marshall, his timing was bad considering how the owners meeting started with our new commissioner’s agenda. “Problematic Players� you say no big deal but the NFL no longer consider spousal abuse “no big deal� and I wouldn’t be surprised if Marshall is given a one game suspension (warning) so now he’s on the radar and hopefully he’s learned from it and should take anger management course (mental abuse is just as bad if not worse than physical abuse). Finally, we see it every year Bronco fans we are in the playoffs almost every year. That’s the point in the playoffs but it’s been how long since we’ve gone to the Big Dance! Patriots have been there 3 out of the last six years now that’s acceptable. To summarize; two out of five situation have been resolved (Bly & Burns). On the back burner; Draft position-DE, Wilson, and Marshall to go. (hehehe) I’m enjoying all the different view points though it’s a Blog. Are we ready for some FOOTBALL!     Not bad Kiyo!!! Lets solve another one. I am totally on board with trading up and Getting Big Gaines Adams. I heard someone say we would have to take Calvin Johnson and I almost thought about it. But we have made alot of offensive improvement so far. Not to mention we have an untapped talent in Scheffler(he's going off this year), and Marshall will be fine. Every year its the same thing. Our Achilles heal - We get beat on the weakside corner(opposite Champ) at will. (1)Thats due to the fact that there is no pass rush and they picked on Darrent. (2) Coyers scheme was too predictable. Darrent wasnt choosing to play off coverage all the time, it was the defense. Anyway, we have our corner, and we have our coordinator, now we need someone that can crush Peyton Manning!!!!! Anyway, I too just enjoy the Broncos forum. I was in the Marine Corps for five years and still live in San Diego where I was stationed. So I live everyday in both Charger and Raider land. I really do believe we may have something here and I have full confidence in what Shaay ids doing. He's done in the last two years what alot of us have been calling for for a long time.     Just an idea, what if the Broncos decide to stay at #21 and take the best available d-end with that pick (Jarvis Moss, Antony Spencer, Charles Johnson, etc.) and package up their 2nd round draft pick along with one (or two) of their third round picks and try to move up into the top of the 2nd round and select another top d-end? From watching sportscasts and looking at mock drafts, it seems that this years draft is deep with quality pass rushing d-ends. And looking at some of the "experts" predictions it only seems that 3 of the so called franchise d-ends (Gaines Adams, Adam Carriker, and the guy from Arkansas) are projected first rounders. I just personally think the broncos should get the "bang" for their "buck" with these picks instead of trading up to get Gaines Adams. What do you all think? And as far as the offense is concerned, Calvin Johnson would be a great addition to the squad but it's kind of a luxury at this point, unless the Broncos decide to trade up to number #2 in the first round and then give up maybe their second round pick this season and another high pick next season as compensation? I just think the Broncos have to address the defensive line problem this season, they can't wait anymore, and Calvin Johnson would be more of a luxury pick at this point.

    #230 Marty McLees; Can't agree with you - here’s Shanahan track record for the past 10-years on draft day (A+): 2006-Elvis Dummervil; 2005-Darrent Williams, Karl Paymah, Dom Foxworth; 2004-D.J. Williams; 2003-Aaron Hunt; 2002-Sam Brandon, Chris Young; 2001-Reggie Hayward; 2000-Deltha O’Neal, Ian Gold, Kenoy Kennedy; 1999-Al Wilson; 1997-Trevor Pryce. Pretty good track record if you ask me, the exception would be Willie Middlebrook in 98 who was drafted #1. With the addition of Jim Bates as Defensive Coordinator we will draft a defensive player who will contribute as a rookie. We got a shot of doing something special in this draft, can’t wait to see what unfolds. Go Broncos!!!

    Kiyo - You're on crack cocaine. Half of the guys you mentioned are playing somewhere else or dead. I would run by the list of idiots we've inked (Daryl Gardner, Dale Carter, and Paul Toviessi come to mind) but frankly i don't have the time. Granted, D WIll had a huge heart and i loved watching him play, the kid got torched on a regular basis and i was cussing him every single weekend. You were too. Bronco fans are tough on everyone who puts on the Orange and Blue, but that comes with the territory, we were spoiled by John Elway and we expect Championships not 9-7 miss the playoffs. Also, Foxworth and Paymah aren't as good as you think they are or Shanahan wouldn't have traded for Bly, he would have traded for Shaun Rogers, who would be a BEAST in Jim Bates defensive scheme.     Marty/#240: Aaron Hunt joins the legions of defensive standouts Shanahan has drafted whom Kiyo failed to mention. Guys like LeSueur, Shoate, Pierce, Eason, McNeal, Mitchell, Dorsett Davis, Toviessi, Bowens, Brown, Gilliard, Campbell, etc.
    He did throw in Paymah and Young in his A+ grade, presumably because they have made such an impact. And I must have missed the part where O'Neal wasn't a huge draft bust.
    I think you're right about D Will. He was a gamer, but he was also toasted with regularity. The fact that he was tragically killed is causing some Bronco fans to revise history.

First of all we didn’t draft Daryl Gardener or Dale Carter we got them through trades, my summation was based on Shanahan’s drafts. I didn’t include the 95 draft because former coach Wade Philips left him with two 4th round picks to start on the second day no first day picks if you recall. I listed players who made the team’s 53 man’s roster or practice squad. Paul Toviessi DE from Marshall never made it out of training camp he was on injured reserve his entire career tough way to go for a #2 pick. I also listed players who are currently playing in the NFL for other teams. Deltha O'Neal made it to the Pro Bowl with the Broncos I believe his 1st year and repeated again with Bengals in 2005. Reggie Hayward is still playing and made the Pro Bowl since leaving the Bronocs. Kenoy Kennedy is still playing for the Lions and if my memory serve me right he made the Pro Bowl in 04 his last year with Broncos at safety we could use now.

    Marty, your right I didn’t list David Bowens DE drafted in the 5th round because he didn’t make the team. I also didn’t list Montae Reagor DE who was drafted in the 2nd round ahead of Bowens. The Broncos wanted to keep him so much to use his physical talents and even tried to convert him to TE before leaving the Broncos - he’s been a starter with the Colts. Foxworth needs more time to develop as a nickel back and Paymah is plenty good and will some day become a starter in my opinion but playing behind Bailey and Bly will only make him better he’s bigger and stronger than Foxworth, great depth at corner now. (sorry I disagree with you on Foxworth and Paymeh) don’t take it personal. (hehehe) Anyone playing opposite Bailey will see many more passes thrown his way, but with Bly we have a chance for more interceptions and sacks because of Bly & Bailey roaming the deep routes. Oh, Jeff Shoate he’s still on the roster whatever that means. By the way if you throw in the offensive players during these drafts you have to rate Shanahan at least an “A� but I’m bias it’s still an “A+� rating.

    I don't know Kiyo, you make some valid points but i still think you're reaching here. Shanahan needs to get some second opinions when it comes to scouting defensive talent in this year's draft. The more i read about this Gaines Adam, i think we need to move up like last year and get him. That or stay where we are and grab this Eric Weddle kid out of Utah.

    Throw all the verbiage at it you want to, your "A+" or "A" draft grade is still based entirely on homerism, not reality. Therefore, it cannot be taken seriously.
    We didn't get Gardener or Carter through trades, they were free agents. And don't go blaming ol' Wade for leaving Shanny with no first day picks in '95. Bob Ferguson traded away those picks.
    Ferguson was player personnel chief with the team from '93 to '95, the year T.D. was drafted. Some have said he had a hand in that draft, including the sixth-round selection of T.D.

    Kiyo, it's one thing that you give us breaking news updates on who other teams are signing, and the lengthy dissertation on Shanahan's draft history but if you and TP are going to take up 25% of the blog space could you please STOP WITH THE HEHEHE crap when you are trying to convey a joke or you are kidding.     #243 John; You're trashing me about leaving Bowens out of my comments, so I thought you'd like to know he's still in the league. Many players don't mesh with Shanahan. They still go on to have great career with other teams. I give Shanahan credit for identifying their talent, sometimes he’s just not able to bring it out of them. I can give many examples but just don’t have the patience for it but, this is why I think Shanny is one of the best GM/Coaches in the NFL (A+).

    I think recent events have signified that Big Al is at the point of diminishing returns with Denver. I am wondering if we can trade him and our 1st rounder (#21) to get up into the top 15 and possibly have a shot at the best LB in this draft, and possibly since Ray Lewis... PATRICK WILLIS. This kid is going to end up in Canton.

    There are plenty of roster fillers out there.
    He hasn't had a "great career," just because Denver drafted him. It wasn't a matter of not meshing with Shanny, it was a matter of zero productivity.

    The Broncos should work a 3 way trade with chicago, washington and denver. Briggs goes to washington, washington sends it's sixth pick to denver, denver sends wilson and 21st to chicago. That way chicago doesn't worry about 15 million signing bonus for the 6th pick.

    Man...I really like Al. He's fun to watch, an impact player, a leader on and off the field and the core of the Bronx D. He has all of the qualities you want not only in a great proven player but also in a leader. I'd really hate to see him go.

    You know I've been hearing a lot about keeping our spot in the draft and getting this Florida DE Jarvis Moss. I don't know about anyone else but this man has a lot of wierd history. He's a Great DE but he's had some wierd issues. for one a high school "immunity shot" gave him a bone disease and he was in depression a lot of his life. BUT an amazing performance in the Championship proved him a great player. Any thoughts?

    Chris #255 - That deal would be a steal for Denver, and will never happen. Wilson's fair market value has already proven to be no better than a 3rd round pick (that was before his failed physical). Even the Redskins wouldn't give up #6 overall for #21 + essentially a middle 3rd round pick. #6 is worth two low first round picks, not a 1st and a 3rd. Keep dreaming!

    I have to say I don't like to see the raiders logo on the Bronco's page, but I must give credit to them. I am sure that the Broncos store would not get much out of an investment that put a bilboard outside the raider's stadium, but we would all think it was hilarious.

    #257 BroncoManiac80; Listen to his interview and watched some video on him at Mason's Morsal. He's mean, tough, hungry and could very easly be the best DE on the board. If we can draft him at 21 it's a bargin but I think he's going to move up.

    I am concerned about Al, our captian, leaving, but more importantly…I noticed that one of the banners on the Denver Post website was an ad to buy f…ing raider gear! Uh.. I don’t want to log into the Post to see an ad from the raiders in my Bronco section - is the Post that hard up for cash that it has to sell a banner to the 2-14 perennial losers from Oakland? Raider fan, perennial means year after year. Get that garbage off my Bronco lifeline
